The general motors forum is probably more suitable.
I haven't noticed this myself but it could be true.

Ones a diesel van, the others a petrol saloon. Different markets completely.

As cars get older the cheaper to run models are more desirable.

Ones an old model avensis, ones an old model corolla, they're both old. Old = cheap.

Lols @ the avensis being described as an SR aura model
SR stands for having sunroof as opposed to aircon

That Passat's was launched in 1997, a year before the previous generation of Golf to the one in your link.

I saw this relation as well here when it comes to older cars (8 years +)
Mondeo with 1.8 or 2.0 petrol engine, can be bought actually cheaper than the same year Focus with 1.4 engine.

The same Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 seem to be priced very similar when you compare the same year.
    Astra and Vectra the same.

When people are buying older car for little money, they usually prefer to take something cheaper to insure, tax and cheaper to run - that's why demand for older Focus would be bigger than Mondeo.

However it's like that in Ireland.
F.e in Poland where there isn't any road-tax, difference in insurance price between 1.4. and 2.0 engine would be probably about €50 per annum, and you can convert any bigger engined car to LPG to run it cheaply, bigger, stronger and better equipped cars keep their value, so in there Mondeo would be way more expesive than Focus.
