I'm 18 and on social welfare. I'm going back to finish my Leaving Cert next year, but I need to fill a gap. I live with my parents and get a hundred euros a weeks - I don't have to help pay bills, boarding, just my motor tax and insurance.

I'm bored senseless and need something to do, basically. Sick of being rejected for training course. All it would cost me is a bit of petrol money so I see it as a decent sacrifice. I'm planning to apply for BTEA and I have to be on social welfare for a certain period of time. I think I would be a hell of a lot more likely to be taken on if I was willing to volunteer.....but is volunteering allowed?

If you want to do voluntary work and still continue to get Jobseeker’s Allowance or Jobseeker’s Benefit, you must apply under the voluntary work option before you start any voluntary work. To apply, fill in application form (VW1), which is available from your Social Welfare Local Office.

I was looking at doing this last year but was told I would be cut €20 or €30 (can't remember which) for each day that I was doing voluntary work.

The social welfare told me that I could work on a Sunday and not be deducted any money, but I think that changed in the budget last week so you'd need to check it out.

Fingers crossed for you, I hope you get something.
