Monitor audio issues

I have recently bought a 24" monitor. Has HDMI input, 3.5mm in and out. Doesn't matter whether audio comes from MP3 player or laptop via 3.5mm or through HDMI from PS3 or laptop it always has high pitch low volume background noises. It seems also that the noises occur when I am browsing PC/laptop or PS3 menus. It's like CPU/GPU related.

I have tried a number of appliances at home and all cause monitor to produce some background noise or distortion.

Any suggestions? This is my second monitor. Same issues..

I've no suggestions except monitors with integrated speakers usually have poor sound playback from expierience, I'd reccomend a pair of external speakers,

See Nick, that's the issue. I am NOT using the monitor speakers. I am using good quality headphones or external 2.1 speakers (Logitech setup, also new). Speakers and headphones are fab connected to other devices. But I can hear background low volume high pitch sounds and I think monitor is the cause?

So its the monitor taking HDMI and channeling the audio out through the 3.5mm port? Hmm, thats an odd one, as HDMI is digital and it converts it to analog before outputting it to the speaker port it could well be an issue with the monitor than the appliance itself, I'm really not that knowledgeable about this area but that would be my take on it.

Agree on this one. I also suspect that the issue is poor converting hardware on the monitor itself. I can also plug in 3.5mm jack and it outputs 3.5mm also. But the quality is still same if not worse. Seems like just a cheapo converter.

Only problem is I can't find anyone complaining about monitor audio issues (I suspect most users would use external speakers connected to the monitor?) and I am not that audio tech savy...

I've no idea, although I would think an issue with the audio processing in the monitor would show on a decent set of external speakers aswell, what brand is the monitor out of interest?

Why not just use the sound card on the computer instead of relying on the monitor?

For the PS3 that would be an issue though, I think HDMI to Optical cables exist, so on the receiving end the HDMI cable splits the Video and audio appart, you'd need an aditional device to convert the optical to analog output, its a messy solution, but may be the only one if the monitors at fault

Thanks for the answers guys. Well see, the way I am using the monitor is:
PC/Laptop/PS3 on table 1.5m away from monitor
    Monitor has HDMI/3.5mm input
Beside the monitor I have a set of Logitech speakers
    NOW
Speakers works fine directly from laptop or PC or any MP3 yoke. HDMI cable works fine with HD TV set (tried at friends house). 3.5mm audio that connects PC or Laptop to a monitor works fine with MP3 player -> laptop or speakers.

I have eliminated all the leads. My question is:
CAN monitor be at fault by not using proper decoding and messing up my audio?
IS this a common issue with PC monitors having HDMI and outputting 3.5mm?
CAN there be a grounding issue?

Monitor is ASUS VE247H. Brand new, made in July. Sent from ASUS directly.

I will try to post the audio signal I am getting later.

I would blame the monitor alrite, as you've pritty much narrowed the problem down to a monitor audio output issue only, I don't have expierience using monitors and HDMI outputting audio so I can't really advise much further

Has the monitor an inbuilt mic? Might be causing some feedback in the speakers

Thanks for reply guys. No, the monitor has no mic or webcam. All it does, takes HDMI for video + audio. I use audio out jack (3.5mm) to output it to external speakers with sub or mostly headphones. Speakers are not so bad while idle, movie or music quality is definitely iffy. Worst is headphones. Can hear lots of noise.

I have done some testing yesterday and here are the findings:
I have connected PS3 via HDMI. Used headphones to connect to TV. Browsing menus on the console have strange high pitch sound that seems to change as I change menus. Once I play any content some background noise appears.
Then I connected Laptop via HDMI. Same with the headphones. No noise while browsing. The moment I use any content, noise straight away. Thought found the issue. Connected headphones straight to laptop output, no noise. Nice and clear no distortion, go figure.

The way I see it is monitor has filters for idle and while playing content. And none of them seem to keep the quality intact. I am just not sure if there is a way to improve this..

Only thing similar I've ever experienced is when I connect my laptop through a 3.5mm lead to my stereo amp. If I do this there is horrible clicking that comes through the stereo speakers. Headphones straight to laptop is crystal clear. Maybe there is some issue with the 3.5mm connection not being able to handle or deliver high quality audio (now that I've typed that it doesn't sound really plausible )

Well HDMI is transmitting digital signal only, video and audio, isn't it? So supposed to be no loss via cable. It's only converting digital to analogue at monitor level where the noise can originate. Or am I wrong?

My guess would be the fault lies in the DAC built in to the monitor, but really havn't a clue about that kinda stuff

More than likely. I have requested the replacement from ASUS once again just now. Will see how it goes this time. Fingers crossed..

Touch wood, it could be you got two duds, its possibly a design defect though,
