Bringing sealed, boxed iPad through security

    Hi,

I will be travelling through Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris over Christmas and will have a wrapped (present) ipad in my carry-on luggage. Does anyone know whether or not I will be required to break the seal and open the box when going through security or will I just be able to put the box through the scanner?

I am used to having to take my laptop out of its bag and show the keyboard but am not sure if the same procedure applies with devices like iPads?

It is a present so I want to avoid having to open the box if at all possible.

Anyone have any experience with CDG airport?

Technically you probably will have to remove the iPad for separate inspection, similar to a laptop. So I'm afraid they will request you open it and security scan it separately.

When the iPad2 was first launched, they mentioned that it was exempt from separate security scanning as it was below some threshold, however from my experience i've always been asked to remove it (and had tried not removing it to see if it was picked up).

I cannot remember specifically CDG but I think they are strict enough so could easily request you open the package.

I went from Dublin-Heathrow-Seattle and I wasn't requested to take the ipad out of my bag, I even asked at security. Id say at worst case you would have to take the wrapping off, you can always re-wrap it :P

Ya, I've always asked if they want to see it and I've yet to be told yes.

I use mine for business flights quite a bit and my experience is that it far more depends on the individual at security than the actual airport rules themselves.

For example of the last four times I've flown from London City airport I've been asked to remove it twice, other two times, no problem. On each occasion I had it in a neoprene sleeve.

London Stanstead - More often than not they want it out of the neoprene but I've seen others at other security gates leave their's in their folios.

Basel - Always out of the sleeve and scanned but again I saw someone else with an identical neoprene sleeve allowed to pass his through within the sleeve.

    Zurich - 50/50

I must have a suspicious face. :pac:

    Thanks for the replies.

I suppose I'll just have to leave it unwrapped and if the box is opened the person getting the present will have to take my word that I wasn't playing with it:D

Leave it exactly as it is,wrapped up.

They'll open it if they want.
