Today coil spring on my 00 Focus has snapped, its still holding its shape and that just making alot of noise when being drove...

So when replacing it can it be done by undoing upper bolt on shock and sliding of spring or does the whole shock need to come out to get it done?

Also would I just replace the ne thats broken are should i replace both while im at it?

    cheers

Bit of advice if your asking them questions.dont do that job yourself as the amount of force behind the spring is it a front or rear spring firstly if it's a front spring u need to remove the shock and use spring clamps to remove and for the spring.dont even attemp to open the nut at the top of the shock ul end up getting injured seriously.we do theses day in day out and I still get nerves when the spring is clamped as I seen one hit the workshop roof one day.and then landed on the windscreen of a 6series bmw

You have to remove the shock completely and then you need spring clamps to compress the spring before you remove any bolts.

The spring is under huge pressure and if you undo the top plate retaining bolt without clamps you risk sending your spring and top plate flying at best and serious injury at worst!

sorry ladsshould have been a bit clearer...

i have compressors for the springs it would be a complete crazy stunt to try remove without them, i just hadnt done them before so was mad to get using the compressors i bought about 12 mnths ago!!! What I was looking to know was it possible to compress the spring, undo the top 3 bolts and have enough leway to get old spring off and new one on but while sussing out the job realised that wasnt an option...

got the job done there this evening put new springs on both front sides and shes back on the road again thankfully all went ok but yeah can defo see what ya mean but the power that can be behind those springs!

There wouldn't be a whole lot of pressure on a broken spring

Depends on where it snapped, if it snapped right at the shock mount like mine did there'd still be serious amounts of pressure in it.
