I want to do comp forensics in WIT but cant afford to go down there right now, if I did Information Technology Managment in ITT (level 8) is it possible to go back and do comp forensics in WIT after thats finished? Is it dificult to do?

There's nothing to stop you in theory from doing the IT course in Tallaght then doing the Computer Forensics course in WIT but I don't really see the point in doing that for a few reasons.

Firstly (as far as I know) you'll only get you fees / grant for one level 8 course, so if you do it in Tallaght, you'll have to pay registration and tuition fees if you do go to WIT (unless there's a 5 year gap between finishing 1 course and starting another). Secondly there may be a bit of overlap between the two course especially in the first year or two, I mean computer forensics doesn't go straight into the Forensics part, there'll be some general IT / Programming modules (maybe a bit slanted towards forensics) in the first year or so. Thirdly I know a few lads who have done computer forensics over the last few years and there isn't a lot of jobs in this area, most of them end up going into working in general IT / Programming areas.

    Hope this helps

Thanks, I was told by a rep from waterford that I could go straight into year 3 with average results in Comp sc + software engineering in maynooth and if i got good results year 4, I do understand though that Tallaght isn't as highly rated as a course. I was also hoping that after doing the course in Tallaght I could try to work for a year or two between and maybe work part time during college. I was planning on doing a masters and PHD in waterford but ive been told that the only way to do that is to do the level 8 in waterford first. Also a few people in IT said i'd be better off doing a better general course first to be more employable than just forensics.

Well if Forensics is what you'd like to do I say go for it. At the end of the day if you can't get a job in that area you'll have most of the skills to get into general IT / Programming anyway so there's no loss. I'd double check that thing about going into 3rd or 4th year in Computer Forensices as it doesn't seem correct to me. There would be specialist subjects in 3rd or 4th year related to Forensics that would build on specialist modules in the first 2 years so I'm not too sure if you could join halfway through. The best thing to do would be to email the course leader and ask him (I'll send his email in a PM).

I'm doing a Masters in WIT at the moment and as long as you have a 2:1 or above at Level 8 from any college you should be eligible to do a taught Masters in WIT, not sure about a research one.
