Help with P21 and claiming tax back on rent...

    Hi,

I have recently received a P21 for the year of 2008 which has said that I overpaid tax and I'm due €390. At the same time I also sent off a Rent form 1 for rent that I paid throughout the same year as I was told I'd be due some tax back when I rang the tax office. Now here's where I'm confused...

I rang the tax office today to see if they had received the rent form 1 form and they said that there wasn't a record of it yet but even when they do receive it, I won't be due anything because I claimed back my overpaid tax in 2008 which is the same year... Huh? I was in a rush so didn't have time to ask too many questions. But can someone please explain to me why I can't claim tax back on my rent now just because I claimed my overpaid tax back?

I paid €9,600 in rent in 2008 if that helps.

    Thanks :)

How much tax did you pay in 2008? Was it €390 by any chance? Look at the P21, it will show you your pay and tax for 2008. If the tax figure was €390, then you have received the full amount back. You cannot get more tax back than you paid.

No, I paid €2,221 in tax for 2008. I don't understand it at all really, it's all going over my head at this point. Everytime I ring, someone tells me something different.

Should I have gotten the full €2,221 back then?

Ok that's strange. Look on the P21 where it lists your credits, is the rent tax credit already there as it sounds like your refund was based on the near full amount available for 2008 which was 400 euro.

If you wish pm me the figures from the P21; pay, tax and credits.
