Hi folks, so this is my budget, i know it's not much but im hoping to get a car for this.

I'm looking for anything from 98-02 with max engine size 1.8, I like auto and manual transmissions.

I know there's a lot of cars in this price tag on donedeal but i need to know what car realistically i can have for this money. A lot of cars out there are underpriced but look ok on the pics.

What should I be looking for in this price tag, any suggestions?

Have you read the bangernomics thread?

Honda Accord would be on my list, unless you need a hatchback/liftback/estate.
You might have to go back to the previous model (94- 97???) or you might get the 98 onwards one for 800.

cml387 : Yes i have read the thread im also a follower but cannot find anything suitable there, anyway it recently has changed to 156 lovers club :(

langdang : I was considering this but feeling bit insecure buying an accord for 800 euros, can I really find one in good condition for this money?

Well, at that budget you can't restrict yourself to looking for a good example of Manufacturer X, Model Y. You just need to keep an eye out for any car in good condition. I reckon you could get an accord for that, might need some basic DIY (not stripping engine or anything like!). Mazda 626 would be another possible option. Valve seals not great on some of those, the Accord would be more reliable all round.

A 1.4 almera would be another reliable yoke at that price.

Edit - I'm deliberately not mentioning Toyotas as they are more popular and usually higher priced because of that

Plenty of these out there in your budget. Uber reliable once the oil is changed regular. I gots one with 192k up on it and its runs like clockwork. Easy on juice too 38-40mpg combined and up to 45 on a run. simple engine and not a whole pile goes wrong on them. On the flip side they arent exactly a thrilling drive with 103 bhp from the 1.6. Just avoid the 1.8gdi (gasoline direct injection) twas the first petrol direct injection produced by mitsubishi and the poor quality of irish petrol caused havoc with this engine.

Cash is king a week before xmas, Look at cars up for 1000-1200 and if arrive with 800 cash the week before xmas you will get a good deal.

I would say you might even get that close to 800 euro.

Id look a toyota carina e. We had an estate version and we sold it to buy vw polo diesel. Big mistake and now seriously regret selling it. It was a 1.6 petrol. Older cars you wont get less than 2 ltr diesel.

I guess the 1.4 Almeras are almost the same underneath as the Sunny I had. Engine was still 100% at 155k miles (short oil change intervals - otherwise the chain will suffer) but the gearbox bearings were bollixed alright. Didn't like downchanges or over-run - LOUD noise from the box.

Depends on what you're drinking I suppose, but even on Midleton Rare you'd be pretty thrashed after 800yoyo's of sauce. 800yoyo's of Tesco Value Cider would be a sight to behold in fairness...
