    Hi,

I damaged iPad2 about a week ago. It slipped down the couch and damaged the volume button.

So I rang Apple and explained exactly what happened. They said no problem, they sent out a box and said either they will repair or send out a new one. Happy Days.

Now they tell me not covered. After 3 people in their customer service centre said it was going to be replaced or fixed. iPad is a month old

Now said will cost 261.. what should I do??

After all they said to me.

Nothing that you can do sadly. Your warranty only covers a fault within the ipad itself, not accidental damage to it.

Your options are to let them fix it and pay them or to ask for it back and see if you can find someone else to fix it for you at lesser expense.

Unfortunately customer service staff aren't always on the ball with these things. You could try ringing up and complaining that you are disappointed that you were misled in the hope they might take pity in this instance, but pity would be your only hope. They have no obligation to fix damage caused by you for free.

Lousy thing to happen. I'd be devastated myself if it happened to me so I feel your pain.

The iPad is on its way out to me again.

    Total disaster how it happened..

Might give them a ring and see. I will be buying another iPad for a family member so might mention that to them too.

There are other places that do repairs. You could ask here for recommendations.I don't know for sure but I imagine Apple are probably the most expensive option. Also as it's so new check if repair work done by a 3rd party will invalidate your warranty with Apple.

repair work by a 3rd party will definitely void your warranty.
Not a lot of people are working on the iPad2 as its difficult to work on, I'd imagine you should find somewhere to repair it alot cheaper than €261, I would think half that

Maybe you could do without the volume control, or at least have time to think over your options. I find the apps themselves have a touch based volume control somewhere. As above though, if it's only a month old I would wait till I had the money and get it done through apple. Other crowds will invalidate your warranty and if something goes wrong, could be worse off again

I know this doesn't help you but from experience any of the Applecare assistants on the phone i've spoken
to are well trained and usually on the ball and theres no way in my opinion that they would have/should
have told you that you would get a replacement for an item that was accidentally damaged by you.

They have a list of predefined questions which they must enter into the system
to allow a return authorization to go through. For iOS devices these are usually
    • Short troubleshooting steps (should the problem be software related), including restoring the device,
updating the software version of iTunes or iOS device.
    • Water damage check, they will ask you to check what colour the two water damage indicators are on
      the device.
    • They will ask you if there is any accidental damage to the device (Screen cracked) buttons broken etc.

After answering these questions will they organize a return. If you answer any of the above questions in
the negative sense they may still offer to accept return of the device but will tell you that it will likely be
returned to you as it was sent in if there is damage to the device or water damage.

Are you sure you told them the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth when you rang them?

You say the volume button is damaged? In that it wont work, im assuming ?

Well personally, i find double tapping the HOME button, a quick single scroll right, and there you have your on screen volume control. I cant remember when i last used the rocker switch on the side of the unit........Unless i've missread your issue.

I rang Apple Care up. Advised the iPad2 slipped down the couch and the metal under the couch must have nicked the area where the + volume button is. This is now pushed in and when you work the iPad the volume icon is always on. The iPad works perfectly other than that.

I told them exactly what happened. Cause I said there was a little dent on it. They were like no problem its covered.

Ah, get you now. Maybe a small flathead precision screwdriver to pry / release the button ?

I'd be very surprised that they would cover the repair considering the dent would be an obvious sign that the fault was not apple related:confused:

Best of luck anyway; hope you get sorted. FWIW, i'd personally not be paying 200+ for the repair.

Might try that and see if I can release it. The other fact also is they sent is back without contacting me. I would have got it paid for. They just said not covered and send it back. A waste of courier.

Got the iPad2 back. Not fixed. Rang Apple and they said tough. The manager of the Customer Support has been spoken to.
Senior engineer has left details on the account and thats that.

What should I do....take the hit for 261 and fix it with Apple..

    1. Screwdriver / attempt DIY
    2. 3rd party repair as mentioned by Cathal above
    3. Apple repair
    4. Live with it

There the options as I see it.

No way pay €261 for a new switch flex which costs no more than €20.
    That's €241 labour

They'll think the same as Apple - you damaged it, you pay to fix it.
