    Hi guys/gals,

My motor is due an NCT(actually overdue)
Problem I have is that the motor or regulator is broken in the drivers door so I cant open the window.
I causes me no hassle as i simply leave it closed but is this an NCT fail?

    Thanks kildare
    Thought as much.
Cost of the replacement is the prob though(about 220+vat for the regulator, about the same for the motor):(

Interestingly a few years back when I was getting my micra testd the driver window was broken ie the thingy that held it would only keep it up once the glass remained up... The second you move the handle the window would fall down. Chanced my arm with the test... Was watchin the guy as he checked the window... Of course it fell but the guy just pulled it up and continued on with the test.... It passed :-)

Moral of long winded story... take a chance!

Yeap! From page 23 of the manual, it's only the drivers door that is affected, presumably due to the fact that you need it open to perform hand gestures.

My Passenger side electric window was broken for about 5 years. I wasnt bothered to fix it, It passed all NCT in that time. Nothing was ever said about it.

I dont think it matters if its the passenger side. Its quite irrelevant, Its like having a tear in your seat cushion!

My car failed on a few things last time, one of which was the driver side window wouldn't go down. Its not broken you just have to hold the button for a second or 2 and it'll go down.
Anyway i got the other stuff sorted and brought it back and i told the guy retesting about the window. His exact words were "was the window down", I said definitely not as it was a rainy morning in February, he said "the rule is if the windows up but wont go down is o.k but if its down and wont go up its a fail, If all the windows were up he shouldn't even have checked".

take a chance, the rear passenger window of my old 98 e200 merc never worked (probably just a fuse but i never checked it). It' sailed through 2 nct tests. no issues.

That's because they only care about the drivers window!

Just had a thought there, if you can get your window down, and drop it in like that, I assume they wouldn't think to check it.

The NCT manual states it's a failure if "Opening mechanism of driver’s window not operating". As unconventional your window opening mechanism was, it did actually work and the window could be opened (and much faster than in most cars too :p). It met the requirements so it had to pass :D.

Its a common problem in the Foresters, mine just stopped working last week. Was looking on some of the Subaru forums and it can be an easy fix, depending on if you can hear the motor running when you press the button.
I'm just waiting on a day without pouring rain or gale force winds to take the door card off and have a look. I'll report back on this thread if it is an easy fix.

    It will fail with that.

I already had the door card off and tried to get the old mechanism out but I think that it is a bit of a nightmare.
Origionaly the motor was working but the window wouldn't go up or down so I suspect that the regulator was the fault but now the motor has stopped working as well so that may be gone as well.
The problem with replacement parts is that they are like hens teeth for a Forrester(Loads of regulators around for an impreza though) cos nobody is selling the parts so it looks like the new part is the only way to go.

If your motor isn't working either then you aren't looking at such an easy fix.

I only bought mine a few months ago but when i went through the history there was a receipt for a "window motor" from a Subaru garage for €350:eek:

Try not too drive into water unless you've a sunroof!
I'd say get it nct'd and if they fail you on then get it fixed... How do you manage car parks and toll booths!

The problem is getting the whole assembly out, this will be the third one I have had fitted in 5 years and my mechanic nearly freaked when I went back to him the last time.
    Yeah price is shocking alright:eek:

I have the window wedged closed with a clothes peg but I can easily slide it down and then when I open the door I can just lift the glass again.
You get quite good at it after a while:)

    Ok lads,here is the update.
I managed to speak to an ex Subaru mechanic and he advised, that as Senna said above, this seems to be a bit of a problem with the Forrester.
He told me that it would almost certainly be the motor and not the regulator.(even if you can hear the motor running the gear system is probably shredded)
I gave up on the secondhand route and went and bought a new motor(€285 )
So this morning I set about it myself.
As it turned out it is a fairly easy job,but fiddly.
Key thing to remember is that you must take the window out(or at least disconnect it from the regulator assembly).
Then you just undo 4 bolts and 2 nuts and the whole regulator and motor can come out.Once out you just unscrew the motor from the regulator and replace.
Next bit of advice is to replace the four bolts first and then the nuts this is because the whole assembly is "skewed" off centre and needs a bit of jiggling to get to fit.
Once this is done you are on the home straight, you can now reconnect the window switch panel to get the regulator in to the down position and refit the window.
Motor does not even need to be reset to ensure the window will open and close the correct amount.
BTW I also took the old motor apart and it is full of water and rusted.
The whole job took me about an hour but that was because I didn't know what I was doing to start with.I reckon I could do it in half the time if I had to do it again.
The above is just a synopsis of how to do the job but if any one needs help you can PM me your number and I will walk you through the whole job and I have a few good diagrams and photos as well.
    Thanks for the help earlier
    Viz
