Netflix devices for Ireland

With Netflix starting up in Ireland in the new year I was wondering are there many devices for sale in Ireland at the moment that will support the service. Will Netflix sell a branded device. I was planning on buying a Blueray player before Christmas and was thinking it would be nice if it supported Netflix. Does the Apple TV support Netflix.

I think the Boxee Box is one of the few that officially support it, the newer ones even come with a dedicated Netflix button on the remote (instead of play/pause which some people aren't too happy about).

XBox probably. It just got Youtube in the latest software update and you can get Netflix on XBox in the states so I suspect the same is likely here too.

New Xbox Netflix Player: New UI, Surround Sound but no 1080P

With the release of the new Xbox Dashboard update (which is now rolling out), Netflix has taken the opportunity to release an updated version of their streaming player. The new player has a number of new features including an overhauled user interface, integrated search, subtitles and Dolby Digital surround sound. Kinect gestures and voice commands can be used to control the app. Netflix also announced the availability of the new player in Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico. The app will also be made available in the UK and Ireland in early 2012 via Xbox Live.
    See, I was right! :D

I was hoping for a device under the 100 Euro mark. The Roku seems good value in the States. However, I was hoping to buy it in Ireland. Is there any devices sold in Ireland for that price that will support Netflix.

Can anybody with an AppleTV device confirm whether Netflix is now on AppleTV in Ireland?

It currently seems like the device options are quite limited.

    Only LG(Blu-ray), Samsung(TVs), Xbox 360 or Playstation.

Fantastic. Looking forward to checking it out when I get home. How is the interface / quality?

I have Eircom NGB 24mb broadband and the quality is really good. The interface is just like the iTunes movie rental interface, easier to use than the Netflix website. A great feature is when you watch part of a programme or movie on say your iPad and you go to the same on Apple TV it picks up from where you left off.

afaik Netflix plays in a lot of different devices.. xbox, ps3, iOS, Android and some SmartTVs (Samsung at least).
You can also use a PC or Mac :)

Should it be under video? All I have is BD data, search for media servers and video upload.

Had a look at Netflix last night. The supposedly HD quality was absolutely shocking I have a 100MB internet connection so it should have been pristine. There were lots of compression artifacts, noise and more. I'll try again tonight to see if it was a temporary issue but for now I'm not impressed. It's just about ok for casual viewing but the quality is distracting. I wasn't expecting blu-ray standards or anything but I was hoping it would give Sky / Sky HD a run for its money which it clearly doesn't. Will try and watch Breaking Bad tonight to see if I can sit through it. In fairness it's only €6.99 a month so perhaps I was expecting too much.

When did you last do a software update on your PS3 ? Mine is at ver 4.0 and it has the NetFlix icon under the Video tab.

Oh and you should also have the RTE Player app there too ?

From memory, I think it's the first item under the 'Internet' menu. If it doesn't appear try rebooting your ATV.

It's the first item under Internet for me but it doesn't work - "Netflix is currently unavailable"

No problems from my PS3, iPad or Mac.

From what I understand you could watch about 100 hours per month comfortably on that kind of data allowance.

As for devices look at the common ones:

    -Apple TV
    -Roku
    -Boxee
    -WD TV
    -A fecking PC
    -Xbox 360
    -Wii
    -PS3
    -iPad, 3DS, etc.

All I want is a box that has:-

    SaorView (Full support)
    Freesat (with full EPG)
    RTE Player, TV3 player
    BBC Player, ITV Player etc.
    Youtube, Dailymotion etc.
    Netflix

    Not asking for much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,247 ✭✭✭✭cnocbui

    Yes it is.

Ireland is a tiny market so the Saorview requirement is rather specialised.

Netflix has only just been made available in this market, so hardly time to manufacture a product and get it to market

BBC iPlayer requires you have a UK IP address, last time I looked, so the box would have to work through a UK proxy. No doubt you would expect that for free.

If RTE player requires an Irish IP address, it would have to not use the UK proxy for that.

I know, but it would be nice. I'll settle for:-

    Irish digital (without MHEG5)
Freesat (with only now and next EPG)
BBC Player, ITV Player etc. (using monthly subscribtion to proxy service)
    Youtube, Dailymotion etc.
Netflix with USA content (using monthly subscribtion to proxy service)

    All on the one box.

I have tried 'Unblock US' service on my PC and it works well. If you want to access UK content (BBC, ITV etc) it uses a UK IP address, for Netflix it uses US addresses. It also lets you use the Players on the US networks like ABC and NBC. It is all automatic.

Sorry but you seem way off the mark there. They have a 20GB allowance in total wich would probably get you 30 hours maximum on SD streams.

Data which I have directly from Verizon Wireless, the data consumption for 100 hours of youtube/sd video/skype is approximately 5 gigabytes.

Sorry Overheal, but you are way off the mark, even at it's lowest quality Netflix uses 0.3GB per hour giving you 50 hours absolute maximum on a 15GB cap with no other traffic or usage. Do the maths. Also bandwidth caps are combined upload and download and as Netflix is a tcp connection, packets send acknowledgments before more packets are sent you will get much less than this. Netflix eats bandwidth caps for breakfast. 15GB is a pittance.
    Your Account & Help
    Manage video quality
We know that some of you have internet data caps and we want to make it easier for you to manage how much data you use.
We offer 3 video quality settings to help you manage your data usage. No matter what level you choose, your Netflix membership price will remain the same.

Good quality (up to 0.3 GB per hour)
Better quality (up to 0.7 GB per hour)
Best quality (up to 1 GB per hour, or up to 2.3 GB per hour for HD)

Anybody still having trouble getting the netflix app on the PS3 , follow this , I couldnt get it until this morning , followed this procedure and bingo ... works a charm.

    http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-Media/Unlocking-TV-And-Film-Apps-Icons-To-Download-The-Apps-Or/td-p/14698097

Basically , create are new user , not PSID , just a new user on the console.

Scroll across to the PS Store and press it ,

Fill out the box , dont forget to put in Ireland and make sure the age is over 18

    Go into the Store

    Leave the Store

Log out of the new user profile you created
Log back in to the new user profile you created

Wait for the whats new section to load

Scroll over to the video section

Netflix icon should be there , click on it to load the app

It'll probably kick you out because your not on the PS network , thats OK , just exit out of the app,

Log out of the new user profile you created

    Log back in as yourself

Netflix icon will be there , log in and enjoy !

I see this device mentioned in yesterdays Irish Times, the HMP2000 from Philips. Seems like a good alternative to the Roku and it has Youtube as well. Look's like a straight forward device at an OK price (70 Euro or so).
