european road trip

    Hi folks myself and the missus are planning on a two week road trip around europe next summer and i was wondering does anyone have the experience of doing something like this and if so which are good places to visit, whats the average cost involved etc. any suggestions would be great smile.gif

    Yeah, done loads of them. Are you leaving by car from Ireland or picking up the car from somewhere else?

    Assuming you're getting the ferry from Ireland, you're going to arrive in France, which in itself can take 2 weeks. 3 things to consider:
    • Most motorways in France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, etc. are tolled at something like 10c a mile. National roads are cheaper, but a lot slower, so if you want to go far, you need to take the motorway. Are you willing to pay for that?
    • If you go south, you're going to spend at least 4 days in France. I'd like that, but not everyone does. If you go east, better go to Germany, Holland and Belgium are no fun in a car.
    • Cars are a pain in the ass in big cities. That goes double when the steering wheel is on the wrong side. Are you planning to visit country areas, or are you going to try and do cities anyway?
