    hey all,

The right hand shift lever broke off on me this morning. It's an SRAM double tap shifter. What I am looking to know is if I need to buy SRAM replacements or would any 9 speed shifter do ?

    Thanks
    Rob

You should try either the bike shop you bought from or SRAM directly for warranty info. Save you forking out for a new one.

You're probably right but there is a known problem with some SRAM shifters:

You'll need to replace a sram shifter with another sram shifter as the sram system is not interchangeable with shimano or campagnolo.

I suppose you'd could replace with either of the sram model range, Apex, Rival, Force or Red, (least to most expensive) but better to get a direct replacement.
I'm guessing it's a Sram Rival lever as there are plenty of reports of these braking. These are usually sold as a pair and so not cheap , €250+ for Rival and Force. I think I've seen an online (german) shop selling single levers, but there's always ebay, here's a Rival one in the US

I looked up SRAM Double Tap and found a set for £80 if your confident of installing them yourself, if not you'd need to go to a LBS for parts & fitting.

You could still try contacting SRAM re. their warranty & replacement procedure. Worth a try anyway, as manwithaplan said there is known issues with some of their stuff so they could/should sort you out.

He says 9 speed, so I presume it's a MTB shifter. Which is good, as they are generally cheaper and separate from the brake lever. Any SRAM X.* 9 speed shifter should work OK, AFAIK.

    hi guy's

    thanks for all the info.
Just to clear it up its an SRAM Rival Double tap 10 speed from my Boardman Comp Alu

These are the ones on it

@ 290 they are more than half what I paid for the bike ! However, I must admit I have got my moneys worth out of that.

Could anyone explain why another brand wont work with the sram derailler?

    Thanks again

AFAIK SRAM is setup completely different from other groupos, i.e. the double tap function is only used by SRAM. Meaning no mix and match of shifters & derailleur.

Seen this online by someone who knows more than me - "No, since the actual cable pull of a SRAM shifter is 1:1, and a Shimano derailleur is 2:1..."

This is an old thread from here with a few people (me incl.) who had the same problem and how it paned out for them
