Hi I was wondering would anyone know how many km per litre I should get out of a 2000 Nissan Micra (automatic). Or where I might be able to find this out? I was on here a little while ago as think my petrol may be running out too quick.

Parkers says 47MPG. These are manufacturers' figures, but I've found them to be quite close to the real world figures I've experienced in the cars I've owned. That said, I didn't really expect it to be that high.

The figures you will get will be the maximum possible from the car/engine.

What you will get in real life depends on far too many variables.

That is true; but I've just had a quick look at their figures for my last 4 cars, and they're pretty much bang on the money (granted I do a lot of driving on the motorway).

Not a hope of getting that, a manual won't get that.
Mpg at high speed will be under 30

The K11 Micra's problem is it has very short gearing, meaning motorway driving doesn't do its fuel economy any favours.

What exactly do you mean by gear ratio? finding it hard to understand...

This is what i could find about the micra... from

    http://www.micra.com.au/technical-articles/nissan-micra-specifications.php

    1st 3.412:1

    2nd 1.958:1

    3rd 1.323:1

    4th 1.028:1

    5th 0.850:1

    Reverse 3.385:1
    Final 4.050:1

As in, 5th in a micra is like 4th in a normal car.

Like putting really really small wheels on a bike. Very easy to pedal fast, but you don't exactly move too fast for all your pedalling,

Ratio figures like above will mean nothing to most people.

Put very basically, a car with low gearing, could be in 5th gear doing 100kph at 3500rpm

A car with high/long gearing, could be in 5th doing 100kph but only spinning at 2000rpm so this car would get better economy then the car doing 3500rpm.

Generally the larger the engine, the longer the gears. This is the reason that larger engined cars can often get equal or better mpg then smaller engined cars on motorway runs.

Ratio figures like above will mean nothing to most people.

I'd even risk saying they mean nothing to all people, unless one knows wheel and tyres size.
Gear ratios just show dependence between number of crankshaft revs to driving axles revs.
Without knowing wheel size, this knowledge is useless.

I think we discussed about it some time ago on this forum, and it's not that straight forward. In other words lower RPM doesn't always mean better economy.

I don't think anyone is using this measure to describe fuel consumption/fuel economy.

It's either MPG (miles per gallon) or l/100km (litres per 100km).

Only exception I know are some Mazdas which show fuel consumption in litres per 100 miles, which greatly annoys me.
To get a real result I always have to divide the figure by 1.609.
By now I'm actually pretty good in doing this calculation in my head :D

Thanks for all your replies, basically i stook in €45 worth of petrol, got 30.89litres for that money, under a week later the car needed to be filled again had gotten around 149 miles out of it. Maybe its normal but to me it just seems like an awful lot of petrol for a micra :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,504 ✭✭✭barura

JESUS! That would get me 240 miles at least! I'd get your car checked if I were you, that's appalling!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 595 ✭✭✭dmm82

yeh i thought so too, but a couple of people said that its because its an automatic it uses way more fuel, really hope its not true! I don't get paid til the end of the month so cant get it looked at until then

Unless its going everywhere in 3rd or second, what sort of driving are you doing mainly?

And why all this "it can't do motorway miles efficiently" My little car does! Could there be that drastic of a difference between engines of the same capacity?

Are you sure that petrol level was the same before both refillings?

Maybe your tank was almost completely empty before the first one, and next time you refilled straight away when yellow light came up.

That could made a difference of over 7 litres, so 23 litres per 149 miles used.
That makes fuel consumption of 9.5 litres/100km.
That's still a lot for a micra, but more realistic.
We don't know what engine is it, but if it's 1.4 automatic, then 8.5l/100km in city driving is a figure specified by manufacturer, so 9.5 could be perfectly possible.

Thats awfully mpg especially for a micra, best bet would be to flog it on if possible and get yourself something better.

Either the car is broken or there is something up with your driving style.

I used a Micra for 10 months on a 140km a day commute and €50 petrol would cover 800kms at a push and 700 and some easily!

Thats whats worrying me :( If its a problem with the car then I can get it fixed, if it's just because its an automatic its a right pain, its my first car and only have it five months, really don't want the hassle or expense of changing it anytime soon!

Know a guy who went from a micra 1.0 auto to a Chrysler neon 2.0 auto, he reckoned the neon used less petrol.

I'd hazard a guess and say you'd sell it for pretty much what you bought it for if it came to that.

I drive an Automatic BMW and I get better MPG than that, there is surely something wrong with the car!

    You've got a 3 speed gearbox?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,157 ✭✭✭✭Alanstrainor

It all depends on the type of driving that they're doing though. Stop start city driving will crucify most cars.

4 speed, Manage 33MPG on the Motorway, 27-30 on rural slower roads.
