I am on disability benefit and am due to start a ce scheme in late January. I was told in my local fas office that i would hold my benefit and also be paid for the scheme but it would bring me in to the tax net which i had no problem with. In light of the recent budget i presume this will not now be the case and will lose my disability benefit. If this is the case it would not be practical for me to take up the scheme as i would be working almost twenty hours for €10 and may have problems getting my disability back when the scheme ends. Can anyone advise ?

As far as I know your disability benefit (illness benefit ?) payment will be suspended while you are on a scheme and restarted when the scheme is finished, unless your GP states that you are fit for work.

People starting CE schemes will not keep their social welfare payment. The exact date of the changeover to this new rule is not clear. 1st January, 16th January and now the date of 20th February have all been mentioned at various times.

Check with your CE sponsor and/or Department of Social Protection to see if you are covered by the new rules. If you are, then you will have to make a choice of whether you give up your payment or your CE scheme.
