Board games

Hi, I am looking to start up a board game club in Galway. First off I wanted to know does such a thing already exist, it would save me the trouble of setting one up if it was already there. Secondly, assuming one does not already exist, does anyone know of a good venue in Galway (city preferably) they could recommend? Just so you know what i am talking about - previously I had set up a board games club in Carraroe, a small town west of Galway city, a local cafe hosted us and it worked out really well. Unfortunately the cafe closed down and the club kind of dried up.

FYI, I had kind of asked this here, but I don't want to totally hi-jack someone elses thread so i decided to start a new thread:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056136178

So, does anyone own or even just know of a venue we might be able to use? All that would be involved is a bunch of us sitting around playing a few board games. I'd rather a public venue rather than someones house because I'd like this to be open for anyone to join, so someones home wouldn't be suitable for this. Currently I have spoken to Buskers pub in town, they were OK with us meeting on Mon/Tues/Wed evenings and said if we were in the habit of buying a few drinks they wouldn't charge us anything for using the venue, but i'd like to hear any other suggestions for venues if possible...

    Thanks

Hi Puteq,it may be of benefit to post this also on the Galway City Forum here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=475 ,if you wish you can place a link on a thread there back to this thread or I could move the thread to there if you like.Mod

Great idea! Maybe try Kellys or the Skeff I reckon.

What type of 'boardgames' do you mean?

There's a decent chess club in the city, and I recall seeing an ad for a Go club somewhere. FanSci in the college are very active and seem to meet almost every night of the week for Magick, D&D and god knows what else.
If you're talking Scrabble or possibly Monopoly, I'm interested.

The Salthouse and The Cottage both have boardgames available for use, so I'd assume they might be willing to accommodate you.

Who buys the game sets? Would you be looking for the pub to store the games for you between times? Would you mind if other people used them? (remember Galway = student town = people likely to think it would funny to remove one piece from a set).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 817 ✭✭✭dafunk

I'd be interested in taking part. The cottage or pjs would both be open to this I'd say. Surely people can just bring a set with them.

I would be so up for a Boardgames club. I love them, but unfortunately my friends do not, so I'm forced to play Monopoly and Trival Pursuit against my laptop.

Frustration is the perfect sort of game to play with a pint or two. The board game fan inside me immediately roared "RISK!!!!" but that wouldn't be too practical at all.

Depends on the pub. I've never met any of the younger students who even know where pubs like The Salthouse are.

Just an update on this to anyone who expressed interest. The Board Games Club is now set up, and will be meeting every Thursday at 7pm. Location of the meeting is at the 091 labs, here:

    http://snipurl.com/244x8k

Basically, this is across from the Radisson hotel, on the corner. The building looks like an unfinished construction building from the outside (but dont worry it is really nice inside!) so maybe not a bad idea for your first trip there to have the mobile number of someone else who is going who knows where it is and they can come outside and meet you if necessary. PM me if you are interested and worry you might not find the place, i'll give you my number!

To answer other questions that came up - myself or other members who run it would look after the board games (bring them to the place and home again after). Games are purchased by the club on club funds - every member pays 2 euro every week, and 100% of this goes towards the club. All the details of this are on the clubs facebook page, just look up 'Board Games Club Galway' on facebook - and 'like' it if you want to keep up-to-date on any news, or to have an input on what new games we would be buying etc.

Feel free to pass this on to anyone you know who might be interested, this is open to all members of the public. The Board Games club will be meeting every Thursday at 7. Oh, and one thing - no alcohol permitted, sorry. I would advise everyone to come along to at least one session just to check it out, its a great way to meet new people, and have a bit of fun

    Might see ye there,
    Martin

Glad you asked, yes this is still going alright, and you are welcome to come along and check it out any Thursday, at 7pm. All the info is on facebook (don't worry even if you don't have an account you can still look it up):

    http://www.facebook.com/boardgamesgalway

One thing to note - our old venue (which i mentioned in a previous post on this thread) is no longer our home, we are currently looking for somewhere new, but in the meantime we meet in Squareyes (the gaming cafe in the city centre). Again, all this info is in the 'discussions' section of our facebook page. Hope to see you there!

Just an update on this for anyone who might be interested - We have a new venue again hooray! Forevermore we will be meeting here:

    www.091labs.com/about/

The instructions in the above link are very good at describing how to get there, and its right in the middle of the city centre. It is the home of the 091 labs, a great bunch of people - you can read about them in the above link as well if you like.

If you want to come along and check out the Board Games Club, remember we meet every Thursday at 19:00hrs and everyones first visit is free so theres no reason why not come along and see!

If you are interested you can keep tabs on the Board Games Club on facebook or twitter here:

Feel free to PM me with any questions etc you might have

    Hi there!

I was wondering if there was any board games club in town or places to find proper games like pubs or cafe. I know Blue note has some in it's place that we can use but I'd be looking more for unusual games like:
    Jungle speed:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jungle_Speed
    Time's up:
    http://www.educationallearninggames.com/how-to-play-times-up-game-rules.asp
    the werewolves of thiercelieux:
    http://mediaplan.ovh.net/~objectif/loups-garous/base/htmA/accueilR.htm
    ...

If none, would anyone be interested into meeting in a cafe or in a pub to play?

The group has a FB page and give details on it. There was an open day I think a week ago, i missed it...
I don't know what type of board game you're looking for but I haven't been at the end as I wasn't interested by the games they have.

Hi, my apologies to the last 4 posters asking about this, don't know how but i missed my email updates about your posts! anyway, we meet every Thursday at 19:00hrs. The best description of where we meet is in this link, but basically if you know Galway, its right above Kennedys bar on Eyre Square:

    www.091labs.com/about/

Info on the club is here, though we really mainly use facebook rather than Twitter:

    www.facebook.com/BoardGamesGalway
    www.twitter.com/BoardGamesGWY

Feel free to PM me with any questions etc you might have. We already have Munchkin, but since every member contributes 2 euro every week, we keep buying new games. And the decision of what games to get is made collectively by members, so if you want war of the Rings or any other games, just join up and cast your vote!

    Hope to see you there

WHat is the selection of games currently available?

Is this like scrabble and snakes and ladders thing or more dungeons and dragons??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 380 ✭✭Puteq

Current games list is linked here, but i'll list them in case my link doesnt work:

    http://tinyurl.com/brqkeog

the games, listed by popularity, is as follows:

    Battlestar Galactica
    Cyclades
    Munchkin
    Dominion
    Lunch Money
    Last Night on Earth
    Carcasonne
    Ninja Burger
    Scrabble

However, this only begins to cover it, members can always bring in their own games, we currently have members who bring in a variant of RISK based on Metal Gear Solid, a Terry Pratchet game (I cant quite remember the name), and the most popular game at the moment belongs to one of our members, Game of Thrones. You may be unfamiliar with all of these games (I was before this Board Games Club) but they really are quite good, and the advantage of going to a club like this is someone explains the rules to you rather than having to study an instructions manual for ages before playing!

I guess really long lasting games (like Axis and Allies, and maybe Dungeons and Dragons if you classify that as a board game) we tend to avoid, for no other reason than we start on Thursday at 19:00, and people will want to get to bed at some point during the night, so short(ish) games are preferred. However there have been a few 'games days' happen on a Saturday which allow for longer games, but these only happen every now and again. If you 'Like' the facebook page you will be informed of these events anyway

Hi there? Are you guys still active?
I recently got into board games myself (and I'm not talking about monopoly/risk/cluedo, but rather boardgamegeek.com top 500) and am always looking for people to play with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 118 ✭✭PauricTheLodger

Yes they are indeed active. They still meet here in 091 Labs on Thursdays from 7pm.

    A few links:

    https://www.facebook.com/BoardGamesGalway

http://091labs.com/about/ has a map to show were it is. The address is 6 Commerce House, Flood Street (Halfway between Old Charcoal Grill and Cactus Jacks and across the road - we have feck all signage so the streetview might help)

I attend every so often and it's always good fun. They have a bunch of different games which range in difficulty from dead simple to table flip. People are always welcome to bring along a few new games too. I have to say my favourite is by far Game of Thrones though - it's awesome =)
