hi, I'm looking for a christmas gift of a car stereo or accessory that will allow iphone 4 to dock in it and play music over the radio/car speakers
I'm a bit clueless, any help gratefully accepted, and best place to purchase

For what its worth I have an iTrip that i got off amazon and I bought a phone cradle that sucks onto the windscreen. Have been using this for over a year and its worked perfect :)

thanks for the reply, that looks like it'll do the job
does it charge the iphone too?
also would it work as a handsfree kit if the phone should ring while listening to music?

Yep it charges the phone but its not a hands free kit. The phone will ring throught the speekers in the car but it has to be picked up like usual

If the stereo has bluetooth the phone can play music and do calls through that.
Mine has BT so whenever I sit into the car it automatically locks onto the stereo so any calls I just answer on the stereo, no need to take phone out of the pocket ever :)

Bluetooth stereo is the way to go - without doubt.

Play your music on it - no wires required - and calls can be taken over the speakers with the push of a button.

I've used various incarnations of the this cheap-for-the-price Sony headunit for the last 3-4 years (different cars).

Any other setup, and you are just compromising on the best solution you can get.
