Not sure if this is the right section for my question, but just found out our baby will need a high energy formula that's on prescription. It comes in at €95 for 24 cartons. I know the current Drug Payment Scheme covers anything over €120 in one month, just wondering if there's a quantity restriction on purchases that go beyond it?

It's going up to €132 on 1st Jan.

If you can get a prescription for a higher amount, go for it.

If not, see if there are any cheaper/generic alternatives. Your pharmacist will be able to advise.

In my case I can only get enough medication for one month when i go the the pharmacy (so its €120 every month). As far as I know it a monthly thing so they wont let you get 2 months worth at the same time. I am open to correction though!

Thanks for getting back, the plan was to get a few trays in of it now, the prescription doesn't have an amount on it, so that's where it gets tricky

I'm not sure what you mean by "a quantity restriction on purchases that go beyond it?"

There is no upper limit if that's what your asking?

You pay for the first 120 (or 132 when it changes) per calendar month supply. if it costs less than that per month supply (and your household have no other prescriptions that would bring you over the limit) you pay for it all.

Will 24 cartons be enough formula for a month?

I mean were half way into the month. Not too sure, but would say he will need 2 in a full calendar month, but as it doesn't say a limit, in theory could i get 3/4 trays of it in case he gets extra hungry over the christmas ;)

Yeah by all means do, keep a good stash of it in case!

You might run into trouble down the line though if you get say 4 in one month, none the next month, 4 the next month, none the next month etc and so only pay 132 every second month.....very tricky as it does not have a dose or quantity

    It's a prescription though, not a diet.

If the op was receiving social welfare I'd recommend looking into a medical card.

Our little lady has been on prescription formula for the last few years due to severe food allergies. There is no limit to what we can get on a monthly basis but we have to pay every month or the chemist will be investigated.

There was one month where we were going on holidays so stocked up loads and as it turned out we actually got way too much and were in a position to skip a month but the following month I went to the chemist and got stung for two months because when it's an ongoing situation payments must be made every month.

Your chemist is the best placed to advise on the correct way to proceed

I'm not sure if it is in any way similar, but I always got 6 month pill in one go, the monthly limit was €90 at the time, same as the price for 6 months supply.

Also, its based on one households monthly supply, so if another person needs medicine, but in one go on the 1st of the month, just in case you need more but the 31st of the month.
