Connect the Kindle to your PC, then open the folder to view in Windows (My Computer>KINDLE drive). Open the "Documents" folder in here, and drag your ebooks in (.mobi, .pdf etc.) and it will work, just safely remove the Kindle and look for them on the home screen

Copying and pasting should work, although you may have accidentally been copying shortcuts or something, the actual file *.pdf, *.mobi, etc must reside on the unit obviously.
    Glad its sorted :)

I bought a Kindle Touch from US from Amazon.com site. I should have it 4th Jan. I often buy stuff from Amazon.co.uk and see some books I would like to buy. Is it possible to get books from both Amazon sites? Also as the Kindle Touch is not available in Europe yet would it even be possible to register it to .co.uk site.

As far as I'm aware for Kindle books you can only buy from the .co.uk site, apparently they use your Credit Cards address so no way "around it"

I just got a kindle and have been buying books of amazon.com.

There have been a few I cant buy(I presume the edition hasnt been released in europe) and from what I can gather if you buy with .co.uk account you can be asked for proof of address for some books.

Another handy way to transfer books is by email. If you go to the amazon site and manage your kindle/manage your devices you'll see a "send-to-kindle email address" so you can just email books to it and they'll sync with the device. If your using a 3g kindle then there is a charge if you download via 3g, to get around this just send it to username@free.kindle.com instead, then the device will only download the item via wi-fi which you won't be charged for.
