Say my name is patrick power and i want paddy.ie, how can I go about this?

It's for my own online portfolio, not a business.

As far as I know, you need to be have a registered company in order to buy a .ie TLD. More info can be found on http://www.domainregistry.ie/. Besides a .ie TLD is a whole lot more expensive than .com, .net, .org domains. .eu is also an option.

If you want to know how to register a domain, you will need to purchase it off registrars like http://www.whois.com or http://www.godaddy.com.

The time when only regisitered companies could register has long gone. Personal names are permitted though you probably need some supporting documentation.

Registering firstname.ie or lastname.ie is still (basically) not permitted unless you have a registered business name

Registering a "personal" .ie domain name is quite restrictive - you can only get certain variants and they don't accept nicknames

Did you look at paddy.ie? It's already taken.

Anyway, it's for a personal portfolio, something more professional sounding would be better.

Would it be a valid workaround to register your nickname as a business name with the CRO, then register your .ie as a business name application?

For example Joseph Bloggs registers Joe Bloggs as a business name and registers joebloggs.ie as their web address?

If your name is Joseph Bloggs and you want joebloggs.ie just get a utility bill in the name of Joe Bloggs

If, however, you wanted to register something completely unrelated to your actual name then it's a bit more complex

It's a workaround.

But it's not necessary: you just need to prove your connection to this country and that you have a valid interest in the URL.

That's not entirely accurate

If your chosen domain is a firstname or a surname you will need a business name or similar to get it
