Refund for Luas Smart Card

I have a Luas Smart Card which I don't use a lot anymore apart from the odd journey. I've requested a Leap Card (for free) by using my Irish Rail Smart card number - and should get this in the next few days.

At the moment, I only use the bus from time to time - so trying to use up my remaining balance on my Luas Card would take some time and the card might be withdrawn before I get the chance.

Therefore I rang Luas Customer Care just now and was told that yes I could get a refund for the card. I just need to send in the card and they'll send out a cheque to me. However just as I got off the phone I realised maybe I will only get the reserve credit refunded and not the entire balance.... or would it be the full amount on the card? Slight unsure here.

I'll give Luas another ring later on to confirm - but if anyone has done this before, could you let me know of the process you went through?
    Cheers.

I'm wondering the same. I have both a LUAS card and a dart card. Both of which have a balance. Will take me some time to use up both cards. So if it's possible to get full refund that would be preferable.

I don't see this happening any time soon. AFAIK, Irish Rail smart cards are still on sale.

They are still on sale from ticket machines true, but not from the website.

    Cheers for the replies.

I followed up with Luas Customer Care again and was informed that the refund will be the available credit plus the smartcard reserve which is €4.00

I'll update this thread again when I hopefully get my cheque in the post.

    No it's €4.
I thought it was 5 euro too.
However was told by Luas Customer Care that I'll get back 4 euro plus my credit balance.

    See point 3.a

Also see points 5.a and 5.b
My understanding of this would be in less than 6 months - all Luas smart cards will be disabled.
Still I would guess that they may allow this to be extended and naturally you have the option of getting a refund.

    Just to update the thread.
Received my cheque in the post before the weekend.
It's been lodged and has now cleared.

A little over 16 euro was on the card.

There seems to be a massive difference between Luas customer Care and the other state companies including the evasive Leap crowd who prefer telling people to contact anyone but them. Both stories above show how customer service should be and with a bit of effort it could be like this in Irish Rail Bus Eireann Dublin Bus and Leap.
