Taxation of musicians

Is there any revenue guidance on how payments made to musicians should be taxed. The 2 situations I am looking at are as follows:
    1. Where a band pays a musician (music is only a sideline for this guy) to join them for a few performances. Is he considered to be self employed or should PAYE/PRSI be deducted?
    2. How should payments to musicians who play pub gigs be taxed. Again, should the pub owner deduct PAYE/PRSI?

Any help or guidance on this?
