From 28 October 2012 EK will replace there A330-200 service with A340-300. Still 3 class but economy increases from 183 seats to 213 seats. A330 being taken out of EK fleet over time. Will be great to see an A340 at DUB daily.

Sweet, some relief from the monotony of 330s and 767s/757s!

I'd expect it to go to a 773 eventually.

Cool A340's by Emirates and eventually 787's by Etihad, DAA build the longer runway and get the whalejet in there pronto!

could a 773 fully laden with passengers, cargo and enough fuel to make it's journey be able to take off from 28?

Fully laden and you'd be going MUCH further than Dubai...

I know its not the benchmark in terms of reliable information but under the wikipedia entry for emirates, they say that their A340-300's are all to be phased out in 2012?

I was thinking the 340-300 would be phased out soon too. And on the financial side I'm sure EK can't wait to get rid of them.

It's possible though that with the delay of the A350, EK may be forced to extend the operating life of these old birds.

I didn't say fully laden with fuel, I said enough to get it to it's destination..i.e Dubai

Etihad have used a B773 into Dublin on a couple of occasions on their Abu Dhabi service.

No problems at all. Don't think that the runway at DUB is too short for certain aircraft to utilse. It is too short for certain aircraft to operate from using their full range and/or capacity.

Note that many modern aircraft are designed for ultra long haul ops from DUB.(A340,B777ER, B787, A350) The runway length at DUB forces a range restriction on these aircraft rather than preventing them from operating, however such a range restriction (lets ignore the state of the economy/market demand thing) thus means that certain routes will not be offered from DUB in the immediate term.

the 340s really are an incredible plane to look at. i flew into frankfurt regulary during the summer and the place was full of them, really an awesome site.

Yeah I really like them, its weird I just prefer four engines planes, more redundancy for failure I guess! Lufthansa has some A340's with a downstairs toilet area where the cargo/baggage hold would normally be, so is a "double decker" also!

So do coaches, but you don't call them double deckers!

Or more chance of an engine failure!
