Any body considering spending a year abroad? (Canada?)

Hey guys, seriously considering spending my third year abroad in an international university (Canada more than likely). Currently working on getting all the relevant information, last thing I need at this stage is the academic reference.

Was just wondering if any other second years are looking at spending a year abroad, and if any are going to Canada or anywhere for that matter?

    It's expensive. That's all I know.

Really does depend on where you are planning on spending the year though. One of my best friends was in Aix-en-Provence in France for her erasmus, and her rent was less than half the price of what I was paying here. I imagine Canada could be a dear enough spot though tbh.

Everyone I know who's spent a year abroad has absolutely loved it, so I'm sure you will really enjoy it Absolute Zero :)

I'm thinking of ****ing off to Canada for a while after this year, but I'll be finished in NUIM so it's not really the same :p

If you're transferring for your final year and not doing a programme like erasmus or something (which adds a year to your degree) then you're liable to pay the tuition fees for the new university. If you do Erasmus or Socrates then you're only required to pay NUIM registration fees, not those of the host university.

Talk to the international dept, they'll have all the info.

Oh.. I was under the impression that I only pay fees in Maynooth (Im doing a 3 year degree, the year abroad would be just a year abroad with no standing on my Maynooth degree)?

So you'd do year one and two here and then year three abroad? Or do 1,2 and 3 here with an added year between 2 and 3? If its the former then I'm 90% sure that would mean you're technically not a NUIM student anymore and so you don't pay their fees, you pay the new universities fees. If it's the second one, that's erasmus/socrates and then you'd be right, you'd only pay nuim fees.

I'm not 100% certain though so DO check with the international office.

The former, I am second year at the moment so next year wont be my third year in maynooth. Instead it will be year 1, year 2 and technically year 3 spent in maynooth, but between year 2 and 3 I will be abroad.

I belived that if I spent the year abroad (do year 1 and 2 in maynooth, providing I pass my exams in this year) I would only pay fees in maynooth, basically all I would have to do is pass in the international College (it has no standing on my Maynooth degree) and then I can return to finish my third and final year in Maynooth. (with a ba int degree)

Ah so you'll be doing 4 years in total?

    When you said
considering spending my third year abroad in an international university
I assumed you meant that you would be going there in replacement of your final year in Maynooth. I get what you mean now. Just an erasmus/socrates/canadian equivalent year yeah?

I did an erasmus year in France last year. You'll have the best time. Seriously, best time of my life, can't wait to get back.

Lots of young people have to consider it mick, good few of my freinds now emigrated to places like Australia. Theres lots of jobs there, or so they say any way. I think its terrible though

Same here. I'm out of here once I finish in Maynooth. Depressing country with no prospects.

My friend is currently in canada for third year. He's loving it immensely. Lots of paperwork though so you'll want to start early on that, as well as lookin for somewhere to stay

    hey there,

may I ask why you think its terrible?

trust me mate, theres plenty of jobs over here. I finished up in maynooth a good while back and arrived in melbourne, australia end of last November and I love it here. dont worry about going on your own to canada if you do decide to (go for it!), i went to oz on my own for the first 2 weeks before the GF came over. dont let that stop you, you'll meet ppl over here if your an outgoing person and join clubs or night time societies. many people say its better going on your own also as you should and probably will meet a fair few new people without sticking to the one group of people i.e. your mates and will learn independence of not relying on the mother or your mates :P

as said above, theres not many prospects for ireland anymore, its getting worse and worse economically, and all young people should leave ireland if they can afford it and are in the right frame of mind and cant get work I think. the standard of living is so much better over here. if you come over here you wont want to leave ill tell you that! lots of my mates are seriously considering heading over in the next year or 2.

I spent 3 months in toronto one summer also (I travel to a different country nearly every summer looking for work) so feel free to Pm me you want any info on the country. it wasn't anything to do with college though, purely for travel and working. twas pretty good over there, but I wouldn't like to live in canada permanently
