Galway--> Waterford, best route?

    Gotta go to Waterford on Tuesday morning, just wondering if anyone's done it before? I was thinking straight to limerick, and then on to Waterford, but google maps says its 3hrs 50!

    Alternative is Galway->Dublin->Waterford, which comes in around the same time wise!

    Anyone done this drive recently? Can you offer an opinion on it?

    You's were very helpful the last time I needed transportation help!

    Thanks

    Derek

    Back before they bypassed Limerick I used to travel home from Galway on a Friday through Loughrea/Portumna/Thurles/Carrick-on-suir. You're still talking 3hrs though. I'm not the biggest fan of the Limerick to Cahir stretch of road, fairly crap in some spots.

    The N24 from Limerick will slow you down with lots of towns and villages en route.

    I'd opt for the motorway myself for a more consistant drive.

    But rather than go as far as Dublin and the M50, I'd turn off at Kilcock and head to Naas (about 15 minutes away). From Naas take the M7 westbound, where you'll pick up the M9 for Waterford.

    Haven't done it myself, but I'd be inclined to go M6 to Kilbeggan and go Tullamore & Portloaise (decent road as far as tullamore).

    From Portlaoise you've several choices. Taking the old N8 (now N77) as far as Durrow and cutting over to KK (following N77) to get over to the M9 is probably the most direct way.

    I cover all of Connaught and Munster for my job and I can tell you from many years of experience that Galway - Limerick - Waterford is the best way.

    There are roadworks in Oola Co Limerick right now but other than that it is the best way to go.

    Via Limerick is best since the tunnel opened. You'll have to pay a toll, but less than you would taking the motorway to Dublin.

    Via Limerick is the best and quickest. Just take the limerick tunnel and you have great road most of the way. You'll easily do it in 3 hours.
