The IEDR are the people in charge of the domains but don't sell directly to the public as far as I know. You have to use one of there resellers listed at http://www.domainregistry.ie/index.php/mnuresellers/list-of-registrars

    I would recommend blacknight.ie

You can still register .ie domain names directly via the registry, but you'll pay several multiples of what a registrar would charge you.

Shop around -- you can get IE domains pretty cheap. Some providers charge more than others. Id recommend Spiral Hosting myself.

    Careful Sully,
You may have to infract yourself for mentioning hosting. :)

Just on the original question, it is cheaper and more efficient to deal with an IE registrar than to register directly with IEDR. Prices have come down an awful lot in recent years and .ie is the main domain choice for the Irish market.
