Anyone who earned the Mercantile Marine medal(issued by the Board of Trade) automatically qualified for the British War medal which would be impressed with the same details.

Yes that's right and maybe the 14 or 14/15 Star if applicable.Had he seen service in the Mercantile Marine solely then he would of been entitled to the War Medal automatically but not the Stars or Victory medals, these would of only being gained if he had transferred to or from the armed services. It is possible however to have served in the armed services first and then the Mercantile Marine after, then his pair or trio would have his army details impressed on the medals and his Mercantile medal would just have his name as seen normally. In the case of someone serving in both services then there will be two MIC's,one for the armed services(whichever branch) and the other for merchant seamen.Merchant seamen also qualified for the SWB.Here is the Merchant MIC's and a link to Northeastmedals
