Can the upgrade not do a custom install where it keeps all old files ect (windows.old) and then be activated.

stupid question time, the 7 is 32 bit isn't it ?

not sure if it's possible to upgrade with a 30 day version of vista - might save you a license iirc 7 pro should allow downgrade rights anyway

do a full backup, clonezilla or somesuch so you can get back exactly where you started

does the file transfer wizard thingy help ?

No file transfer program no use as it only takes over the likes of my doc ,pictures and setting but it does not backup programs .Thanks for the info think I will have to clean install .

maybe i dont understand this but why are you needing to install vista at all? A windows upgrade can bypass vista and take XP straight to windows 7.

XP to 7 you wont be able to use the programs already installed on xp,vista to 7 most programs run after upgrade.

would i be right in sayiny that both of them do a clean install from xp so youd be required to reinstall anyway

but surely if you're going to buy an upgrade to vista and an upgrade to 7 you might as well buy One upgrade to 7 Professional and get the XP Virtualization?

test to see if you can backup / restore XP into a VM

you can use ntbackup or whatever to do a full restore into a working copy of XP

a lot of the time it works

I see where you're coming from. You want to upgrade XP Pro to 7 Pro. Obviously you can't do this directly so you want to use a Vista Ultimate disc to do the upgrade. If you do, then you cannot upgrade the Vista install to 7 Pro, only 7 Ultimate. You can't upgrade to an OS at a lower SKU level than the OS you're upgrading.
