    > stay central and close to everything.

Not really possible as everything isn't central as such but any hotel with a postcode of 75001,75002,75003,75005 will be more or less central. It'll be just the Eiffel Tower and Sacre Couer which won't be within walking distance.

Central and close to everything is a bit vague, but Paris is easy to get around by foot and public transport.

Anywhere around the the 5th arrondissement (postcode 75005) on the Left Bank is good. Its home to the Sorbonne and the Latin Quarter so there is a lively buzz about the place with a good mix of bars, cafés and restaurants.

The old market street of Rue Mouffetard winds its way down the centre of this corner or Paris and is one of my favourite parts of town.

Its within walking distance of Notre Dame, Jardain de Luxembourg and The Louvre. More affordable than the central areas on the Right Bank and less stuffy than the neighbouring 6th arr.

If you could be a little more specific about what you're hoping to see and do in Paris, I could give a more detailed reply. Here is a brief handy description of the 20 arrondissements of Paris.

Is price an issue, it was for me, I've just booked something similar today for January.

I wanted to spend as little as possible, be in a nice area to relax and read, and not be too far for daytime excursions. Ended up booking a hotel at the northern edge of the 3rd arrondissement, so I'm about Marais which seems ok.

From what I could see there was no advantage by booking flights and hotel together on lastminute. But look at booking.com, you can filter by area and then sort by price.

The Marais is a great location, close to everything. I like the Hotel Duo -- steps to the Seine, short walk to museums, Notre Dame, etc. Great shopping, restaurants and nightlife in the neighborhood.
