I will be purchasing my first smartphone in the coming days and i was looking for some advice on an app to aid my running to download.
Ideally i would like an app which would advise on what speed i am doing and which can tell me how far i have ran.
Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

Endomondo does that for you and its free. The website records all your runs online and shows you lots of stats all for free :-D

Also if you do get a Garmin watch down the road, it can read the data straight from your watch :-)

If by smartphone you mean iPhone I recommend iSmoothRun http://ismoothrun.com/ (app, paid) or RunKeeper http://runkeeper.com/ (app + website, free). I currently use iSmoothRun app with RunKeeper website.

I was lucky enough to get the Nike + app for free on a promotion (available for some fee under €2 on iTunes), and would highly recommend it, excellent GPS tracking and accurate distances, and good features on the website when runs are uploaded. I also use Runkeeper for creating routes and it also a useful app, although I found the GPS a bit patchy at times. Hope that helps.

    Smartphone...Apple.

For proper smartphones running Android the Endomondo app is going to 10cents today in the sale, was going cheep a couple of days ago as well but has been put back on now. Will only be that price until about midday 12/12/11 I expect.

Haven't actually used that app myself though as I've a Garmin, but for 10p I bought it anyway incase the watches ever all die on me.

If your phone is Android, then you could try the app, written by a poster here, and mentioned on this page. Don't know anything about it though.

I find the Endomondo website much better than the Garmin connect website. I've used it with my Garmin forrunner 410 and 610 and it connents to them no problem.

Its free for the Windows Phones.

Endomondo looks gud, can you set a pace target with it, so that it lets you know if your going too fast/slow?

I used the Nike+ one for ages. It was perfect and just what I needed at the time when I was getting into running :)

    +1 on www.runkeeper.com

It's totally free and records all your data for viewing on the website. Found it a huge help for spelling out exactly how unfit / slow I was!!
