Anyone advise against a 4S?

    Hi,

I am thinking of buying an iPhone 4S with vodafone.

Would any of you that have one advise against it, and why?

Even if you are having some issues would you still rather have the 4S or a different smartphone?

Also, if you could change carriers, who would you change from/to instead?

    Thank you.

    Nope, you'll never look back.

Although if your buying on Prepay your better off buying direct from Apple, because at least then you have the freedom to switch carrier if you wish at any time.

three seem to be the best carrier, it's a pity it's ****e outside dublin and also ****e for me inside my office in dublin 8.

Get yourself some free pre pay sims from the various networks and test out their signal where you live work and play. You cant to see good 3G signal. Then pick the best option for you.

    Yes I would advise against.

I bought one last week direct from apple and I am now returning it.

    Reasons:
    a) its giving me eye strain
    b) screen is too small - even smaller than my htc desire
    c) its too bloody expensive to carry around I am afraid of losing it/getting mugged for it
    d) itunes is a curse
    e) android is more flexible and in my opinion more powerful
    f) it feels like a glorified mp3 player whilst andorid feels like a mini-computer

    But thats just my opinion

I got one a few weeks ago and im thinking of going back to android. Im havinig issues with 3g but that could be a carrier problem. However the batt is terrible even after the supposed fix. Android is defo more flexible and just seems to work much better. However there is a few apps on apple that android dont have. So i dont know ill give it another few weeks and if no improvement up on ebay it will go.

Had battery issues this week after adding more apps to notification centre. Removed the new one and some more and just plugged it in for first time in 2 days. Used to be lucky to get a day

Edit: using a 3GS by the way. But would expect the effects to apply to 4S as well

Well if we are going down this path...

Always had Iphones, recently decided to try android with the Galaxy Nexus

Some issues could be how samsung configure the phone

Apps - not all work with ICS

I had to install extra apps to allow me to hear the phone ringing as its very low

App needed to change the vibration settings

Does not like sync with my Macbook.

Does not seem to like audiobooks like M4P

I have to install seperate Auido book App

I have to install seperate Music Player App

Complex process to kill apps - had to get another app to really kill em

The whole process of having multiple widgets of varying sizes to apply something is stupid.

Notifications dont stay on you homescreen..I need another app for that

Setting wallpaper - you have to crop image, then it applies it across all screen which scroll, so you never see the whole picture

I needed another app to stop wallpaper scrolling

I have been advised to get AV Software ??? - another app

You have to do a lot of tweaking

I just want a phone I can plug into the dock and it does everything

Thats why mine is on Ebay

    My 0.02 worth anyway

All reasons not to get vanilla android like you get on the nexus range of phones.

The manfacturer tweaked versions like HTC Touchflow and the samsung equivalent are much better and don't have these problems (imo).

Firstly, i've had a good few iPhones, few Nokia's, Android or two and Web OS device.

Of all the iPhones i've had the iPhone 4S battery was the best of them all. I got a good day out of it with
heavy usage. Don't quite get the two days out of it but i charge every night anyway so it doesn't bother me.

In relation to Opinion guys post.

    a) The iPhone has the most vivid HD display i've seen on a phone.
    b) Personally i think the screen size is perfect. Any bigger and its becoming a monstrosity like some
of the android phones with 4' screens.
    c) I agree iPhones are too expensive, however if you want any phone Android or not with specs as
good or better than the iPhone your looking at between €500 and €600.
    d) I think iTunes is fine but i've been using it for years as its the standard for the mac
    e) I've tried a few android phones and found iOS far superior in hundreds of areas.

The prospect of a larger screen iPhone really doesn't appeal to me. One of the things that put me off getting an iPhone for so long was because I thought it was too big even at its current size. Some of the current Android phones are ridiculously big. I want a phone, not a mini tablet that I have to carry in my combat pockets.

Not too sure what you mean, I thought the Nexus was tweaked as its a Samung ??..or am I missing the big picture

I did find the screen beautiful and the swipe was excellent

The Nexus has a 4.65 screen and the iPhone looks tiny in my hands

The large screen is beautiful and swipe works fab, but it is big...BUT very light

Its easy to get used to and is great for gaming,Web and Movies

I think a large size is grand but you need to make it light, this would mean no metal bezel and no glass back

The Nexus line (aka. Pure android, Google's phone, etc) is just stock android without any additions. Google picks a different major developer (Samsung, HTC, etc) each year (AFAIK) to develop the phone to add allow each manufacturer a shot at making the hardware. So, although they've nothing like HTC's Sense UI, you'll get good upgrade life, as you don't need to wait for the custom version - you also get it first. I think the original Nexus (One) only stopped getting official support when Ice Cream Sandwich came out - compared to some phones which don't get ANY updates/are NEVER on the current OS.

Actually I thought the battery life was quite good.
    a) The iPhone has the most vivid HD display i've seen on a phone.
No doubt. Yet it still gave me nasty eye strain, when no other phone ever has. Don't ask em why - just happened.
    b) Personally i think the screen size is perfect. Any bigger and its becoming a monstrosity like some of the android phones with 4' screens.

Agree with you both some of the android's are ridiculously big. The galaxy nexus is just stupid in size imo - 4.65" or something. Just to point out - none are really 4" - most are clocking in around 4.3". Its rumoured the iphone 5 will be 4". Personally I think 4" with hi res is the ideal - might even considered iphone 5 if this comes true.
    c) I agree iPhones are too expensive, however if you want any phone Android or not with specs as good or better than the iPhone your looking at between €500 and €600.
HTC sensation and Samsung Galaxy S2 both match and indeed exceed the spec of iphone and come in around 450. The ihpone i'm returning was 700. Thats a big difference in terms of something that can easily be lost stolen. Again the new nexus is stupidly priced at about 600+ (as you may be guessing I wouldn't touch a nexus - especially since the S2 will be getting ice cream sandwich next year anyhow - can't see why anyone would want nexus)
    d) I think iTunes is fine but i've been using it for years as its the standard for the mac
Oh I've used it for years for music and I really like it for that, but it pisses me off that I have to use it to access iphone. I would much prefer to have iphone show up as a disk drive in finder. Why it doesn't do that is beyond me. Would make if far easier to copy pdf's and stuff onto it and copy photos off.

Enough said on the android Vs iPhone.

On the netwrok side of thing
3 have some 3g connection issues with iphones, unless its been fixed recently
Issue:When it drops to edge network it doesn't automatically go back to 3g when back in a 3G zone.

I'm on o2 and personally couldn't fault them although I am mostly in Dublin which has great signal on most networks

    Don't get a 4s. Just buy a 3gs or 4 cash.
You're just paying a ton to get Siri, which doesn't work all that great outside US, yet. And can be replaced, in part, with Vlingo etc.
Go with three if you have coverage, free data plan.

Some of your comments are incorrect:
Well if we are going down this path...
App needed to change the vibration settings

You can configure the vibration in settings

It should and it does, maybe you just have a fault.

No you dont. The standard music app plays audiobooks fine and has adjustable reading speed.

Why??? whats wrong with the music player already installed?

Yeah DO NOT get it on Meteor. Way too many issues on their network for this phone.

I would say O2 are the best for iPhones.

I'd agree. If you are going with O2 make sure you read up on their data offerings and related costs. Only go with them if you have to because of signal issues with other networks.

All of you that are thinking of getting rid of your 4s, PM me if you're interested in selling!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 500 ✭✭✭Ya-Boy-Ya

If you already have a 4 I would advise on not upgrading.

Its basically the same but for Siri added on.

Dont, like me, fall for the "extra speed" coz there isnt.

Unless u really want a better camera... coz thats all thats extra with 4S.
