    Hi everyone,

I wondered if anyone has been through this. I started a course in September and was given a one off payment from the Back to Education Allowance. I get the jobseekers payment also. Unfortunately I had to leave this course recently due to personal circumstances.
What should I do next? Do I have to give back the one off payment to the BTEA and do I have to reapply to the jobseekers as I am no longer on this course. This is really stressing me out and I dont know what to do, I am afraid that they will stop my jobseekers allowance. i was on a CE payment before I started the course

first of all i would get a letter from the course saying you no longer are attending and then head to your local social welfare office and tell them if you cant get a letter first head down anyway so you can get the forms and fill them out

not sure on paying the money as you stated the coarse and bought stuff for it i would doubt they will look for it back

What forms do I need to fill out? I should probably go back to the doctor to say why I left the course, due to fatigue and stress and severe anxiety. Im not sure the best way to go about it.

If you are talking about the €500 lump sum, then yes you do have to pay it back.

I was in a similar situation to you, I ended up leaving a course due to depression and when I told the Social Welfare this, they informed me I would have to pay back the €500, regardless of whether or not I bought stuff for the course.

If you get €100 per week on JSA then the Social Welfare will only take €5 weekly from you for payment.

However if you get a job, start a Fás course etc where you earn more money, you and the SW will re-arrange weekly payments, I am assuming you would be paying back more than €5 per week though, but how much you pay back would depend on your income.

Also if you have €500 in the bank/credit union etc I think you can pay it back all at once. I'm not 100% sure on this though.
