    Hey all,

I recently started back swimming and the OH joined me. She is having huge problems with her hair since she started, the chlorine is ruining it. She bought a sort of rubbery swimming hat that said it was waterproof but the water is still getting in.

Does anyone know if you can buy a proper waterproof hat anywhere in dublin or even online?

    Cheers all

Don't know about a hat, they all seem to let water in. But boots do a protective hair treatment that you put on your hair before using the pool. She could try that.

Feel her pain, I go most days so I've just given up and put up with bad hair days. If she's going every day it's bound to take it's toll but if she goes a couple of times a week maybe using something like the VO5 hot oil might help after swimming and as said something to rub in or spray on the hair before getting in. She could try wearing two swim hats or a god shower cap underneth the swim cap, will look a bit mad but noone will see it underneath.

im the same way since i started swimming and i was told to get "aussie" leave in conditioner, and spray into my hair before i put on the hat.it should protect the hair somewhat.and maybe once a week/2 weeks after washing hair to use "aussie" 3 minute miracle for dry hair.this seems to work ok for me.

I have never heard of any waterproof hats before, your best bet is to google it or try amazon.

Your hair is always going to get wet of sorts while swimming. A silicone hat works handily enough. I heard a trick there to put conditioner into your hair before you put the hat on and it provides a barrier to the chlorine, maybe give that a go?

I'd love to find out what people do to solve this problem, that doesn't involve putting conditioner in your hair before getting into the pool. Im a guy, and hate the taste of the stuff, so would love to be able to suggest an alternative to people. You can immediately tell if someones just jumped into the pool with a load of it under their cap.. its signalled the end of a swim session for me a couple of times it was so bad:(

I have no other solution other then that as is. The fact is your getting into a pool of water. Your going to get wet and its near impossible to keep anything dry. In order to resolve the issue, just wash your hair after and use a good conditioner. If you think chlorine is bad, try sea water, its worse!

Has she tried any of the 'specialised' haircare for swimming?

The water probably isn't actually getting through the material, it's more that the hats slip and let water in that way. Wiggle have this swimcap - http://www.wiggle.co.uk/aqua-sphere-aqua-glide-swim-cap/#more which the spiel says doesn't slip off as easily.

Never heard of the conditioner thing. Don't really see how that would help, sure if the cap is letting water in it's just going to wash the conditioner out and the chlorine gets to your hair anyway. Excessive conditioning is probably worse for your hair than the chlorine. :)

I use a silicon swimming hat. I always get a certain amount of water at the base of my hair but if I have the hat on correctly the rest of my hair doesn't get wet at all. I have quite a lot of hair so I have to make sure it's in a big knot at the top of my head so that the base of the hat is REALLY tight around my head. Put a little talc in the hat to make it easier to get on. Makes me look a bit like an alien but generally my hair doesn't get wet.
