A buddys Citroen C5 HDi is running sluggish as hell and its the air mass meter thats acting up. I've pulled it out and cleaned it off with Q-tips ( lots of dirt came off the sensors) but its actually worse now at low speed. Any advice on what I can use to clean it up better.

    Thanks in advance , Ed.

PS Its getting dark out there, need this quick :p

Don't use any domestic cleaner, or any normal electronics cleaner. The MAF is very delicate, and even a normal contact cleaner will destroy it. The only cleaner that works, is called Servisol Aero Klene 50, it's in a white aerosol with a yellow label in Maplins, or any other decent electronics supplier.

Also, if it's getting dirty, it's worth giving a look at the airfilter housing to see if there are any leaks there.

The only thing to do with that is low pressure compressed air don't put any liquids on it.ive never actually seen cleaning a air mass fix the problem

I agree with this with one exception, petrol Toyotas. I have often successfully cleaned the MAF on a Corolla or a Yaris (around '00 model year) to get rid of a fuel system too lean fault code. But that is an exception and the symptoms are not the usual ones you see with a bad MAF.

But in my experience the usual diesel lack of power caused by a bad MAF is never cured by cleaning.

largely true what is being said here as it depends on the MAF in question. Some of the Bosch ones with the sealed module like that used in the Astra G / Vectra B&C would be worse if cleaned. Some MAFs that have an exposed wire inside intake housing usually do, especially if there is an oil breather pipe plumbed into the intake just downstream from the MAF housing. Some MAF's also have small electronic components embedded into their bodies, and obviously if these fail then no amount of cleaning will improve the situation. If performance is poor on a diesel, disconnect the MAF and see what happens....
