Some lock questions

    Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could assist with some answers to two questions for me.

First the side door of the house I am buying has no key for it. So I was wondering if I need to get a locksmith to come and open it or if it was maybe possible drill it out myself?

Would anyone be able to estimate how much a locksmith and new lock would be to sort this out?

    The door is hardwood:

Secondly, the handle of one of the windows has snapped off. Does anyone recognise the handle make or where I could get one?

One of a good one on patio door:

    Thanks for any help.

This shape lock is called a Euro lock cylinder.

    I dont think it is going to be possible to remove this lock unless you can;

    1. Open the door first, then you can remove the lock barrel, by unscrewing the fixing screw on he edge face of the door.

    2. Drill it out. This is not an easy job unless you have the right tools. It can take a while so better using a plug in drill with a new bit for metal.

Might be easier to get a locksmith, as long as it is not urgent you might be able to make some kind of deal for a non-urgent call !

The window handle looks like an ASSA handle but I am not sure, MIRA are a distributor for alot of window gear and while they might not sell to you directly they might be able to tell you if it is from one of their ranges and where to get a replacement.

FYI it looks like those two handles are different .. one has a screw visible and one doesnt.

Thanks for that. Number one is a non runner I'm afraid, there is no key for the door :( I do have access to good drills and decent metal bits though.. would it be a very tough job to open it myself then?

I presume a locksmith would have the door open fairly quickly and I can just change the lock then?

It may be the easiest option in the long run I suppose.

Yea I was thinking the door one was different because of the screws.. I presume its the same make used throughout the house though. Should of took one from another window.

I'll check out MIRA and see what I can come up with. Thanks for the help!

how is the door hinged? are they visable from inside or are they concealed? you might be able too unscrew the hinges too pop the door off.

i would suggest unscrewing the handle on inside.grab the cylinder lock with a vicecripes.rock the bejaysus out of it back and fort being careful to use small movements so as not to damage the door.if you can break retaining screw the barrell will slide out

Just to follow up on this in case anyone has any similar questions in the future.

I got a few quotes from 3 locksmiths to do this.
All to open the door and replace with a new lock with three keys, including vat.

    Quotes were €110, €140, and €170.

I don't think €110 is too bad for it so I'm probably going to go with that.

    Hi PaulKK
Would get a locksmith. Just try one thing before you do. All my euro locks have the same key. try key you have and see if it works. I had mine changed so the one key does all , back/front/ patio doors so one key does the lock. lighter key ring.

Lol, thanks, I hadn't even thought of that!

Its always the obvious things you don't try!

This is the only option really and is what the locksmith is going to do Im sure. Once you have access to inside to remove handle, it should be fine
