    Hi,

When i fill my car up with water it flows straight out where the thermostat is. I think there may be a lead broken.

May have to get a new thermostat - does anybody know how much it would likely to cost?

    Thanks

The hose or stat housing is broken?
    Same car I presume http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=75818399 ?

Thanks for your reply Rover - yeah same car,

That's exactly what the AA fella who came out to me said. Stat Housing might be broken. He said i might need a new thermostat aswell.

Hopefully its not a big job. Just wanted to get an idea of how much it was going to cost.

On the your engine the thermostat housing and the thermostat itself are one piece and cost in the region of €40-€60 retail.

Labour, coolant fill etc should be in the €60-€100 region max IMO.

You'd really want to factor in having the cooling system properly diagnosed aswell though to be sure that no further damage has been done which may well be likely if you didn't notice the gauges and were getting burning smells.

Ya from my memory it's all one piece.and between new coolent and bits and bobs all together I'd say I'd be lookin about 120 quid not bad at all

    Hi folks,

Turns out there is more damage done to the car than i first thought.

Apparently the engine is ruined. Can't believe that could happen just because the stat housing was broken. I know i didn't notice the temperature gague going up but doubt i was driving on it for too long.

Looks like its a write off anyway so i better get myself on the lookout for a new car.

    Thanks for all your help

What damage is done? Head gasket gone?

He said its at least the head gasket and could have done more damage to the engine.

I was told the cost of repairing it could turn out to me more than the car is worth so they are not going to fix it for me.

It's a pity that it just started out as a leaking thermostat and now it looks like its a write off.

Surely thats your decision, not theirs?

Approx €600-€800 to repair, how much are you going to spend on a new car with unknown history?

Is it petrol or diesel? You'd pick up a good engine handy enough and the get it fitted.
