    *Decided to start a thread here as I'm getting no feedback in the L.C forum and it is GAA related with the "hurley" part*

    Hey our teacher is going to start us on planning ideas on our project for the L.C so I came up with creating 3 models of Hurley sticks which I think is a pretty good idea.

    I've come across this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRn6q8jTiAc and I find it to be very straight forward but I'm willing to take on the challenge.

    My concerns for this project is that is it really enough? and what could I experiment on it?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Best of luck with your LC project. That's a good clip you showed and gives those who aren't familiar with hurley making the insight into the skill, craft and work that's involved.
    I'd say you could make a great LC project on hurls( as we call them in KK!). You could divide it into different headings-
    * sourcing the ash
    * marking the template ( what design you would go for e. g in Kilkenny, we have different shaped hurl as opposed to Cork shaped O'Connor hurl- could investigate hurlers different preferences
    * cutting using band saw
    * planing/ sanding etc
    * getting your product ready for use
    * discuss what makes a good hurl- size, weight, balance, handle, heel, good strike, strong, durable etc
    * evolution of hurl from 60's to the ash hurl to the tried and failed plastic hurl( do you remember them!) to the cultec hurls etc
    * future of hurl making- difficulties sourcing ash, cost etc

    Hope this gives you afew ideas? Could be a very interesting project and could lead to the next new hurl maker!!

    Cheers for that information very helpful!

    About the History part I should just focus on the evolution and add in a bit about the game?

    It is not gonna be an easy project but I don't like making something that is too easy 'cause I end up getting bored :P

    Also talk about the new fibreglass hurleys when you discuss the evolution.

    I think a detailed backround on the game would add a nice touch to the project.

    Yeah, you're dead right to pick something that you've a huge interest in and make sure that this enthusiasm resonates through the project with an interesting/ well designed brief etc
    An idea on the history part might be to interview grand-parents/ neighbours etc on the old hurls. My father talks about playing with boards literally, that weighed a tonne when he was young. He talks about using hand saws to cut old ash roots etc
    You could also do a survey on students favourite hurls and graph the results. Perhaps if you have a contact in a different county, you could do a similar survey and get different results and ascertain the reasons why.
    The ideas are endless.... how long is a piece of string!!! Will throw down afew more ideas if anything pops into my head.
    Good luck with it

    design hurleys with different attributes

    heavier head
    lighter head
    more timber in the handle, shaft, heel etc

    then get a decent hurler to test them out and see if there is any difference in length of the puck with a sliotar.

    there is a hurley maker who bores holes in the bos of children's hurleys, in order to make the head lighter. see if that makes a difference for children

    I'm not experience in making hurls so I doubt I'll be able to make those attributes without a detailed guidelines (or video) and I think I'd be better off making copies of different types of hurls for a start.

    Yeah I'm gonna try to get my team mates at training to try one of them out.
