Had as gmail account for a very long time . Mobile number requests popping up on log in now. When I hit the close button it decides to forget the number request and let me in.
Anyone know how long I've got till they actually lock me out without it.

No mobile number request popping up for me. When's the last time you ran/updated your virus scanner?

    I don't think it's that simple.

Blogger help forums get lots of request from people who forgot their password and have lost access to their primary email address.

The record-your-mobile-phone-number-in-advance thing is an attempt to give them another way to prove themselves: Google can send the unlocking code via SMS to the phone, provided the number was recorded at a time when the person was authenticated.

Pretty sure that the same principle applies to Gmail (which is really all part of a Google account these days): they won't ban ya for not telling them the number, but it's in your interests to have at least one secondary contact method listed.

Thanks but this is an ongoing thing with these companies.

My computer runs 24hrs and automatically scanned by 3 different daily updated anti this that and the other programmes.
    Thanks again.

Thank you for that. I wish I had your confidence. I still say there is no need for it. consider the following:

I have a problem accessing my Gmail account.
    I contact gmail.
They ask me the answere to 5 security questions that I previously registered with account.
    I answere correctly.
They sort my account out and let me in.
Job done. no need for mobile.

sometimes the old fashion way is the simplest.:pac:

Gmail have 260 million users worldwide. What you propose is never going to happen.

The mobile option allows a recovery token be sent to your mobile.

BTW - the mobile request is not a pop up. It's a page between log in and your mailbox. They won't stop you accessing your mailbox if you don't provide a number.

At the moment, I think you've a reminder question. Not the most secure method.

I have an account that I haven't a mobile on. The message goes away after a while. Reappears a few weeks later.

They could ask for more security questions to be attached with account.

As long as the message comes every few weeks and goes away again I will be a happy bunny.
As always...options are nice and friendly.:pac:

More complex user experience and would in turn would require more support.

Understand your concerns about privacy but if you have these concerns stop using the product(s). Bottom line is, that if something is provided for free then you are what is being sold.
