30 counts of sexual abuse, 27 counts of rape on two children aged 8 and 9.
This man only gets 7 years?

I'm trying to express how angry I feel but I can't get it into words....

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2011/1209/mcdonnellk.html
A 39-year-old Co Mayo man has been sentenced to seven years in jail for the rape and sexual assault of two girls.

Kevin Owen McDonnell of Adhann Or, Bangor Erris, Ballina, Co Mayo, was convicted by a jury last month of 30 counts of sexual assault and 27 counts of rape against the two girls, who were aged eight and nine at the time.

His victims, 20-year-old Kelly Geraghty and 21-year-old Charlene Barratt, waived their right to anonymity so that he could be named.

They said they felt the sentence was not long enough for what he had done to them.

But they felt that at least justice had been done and McDonnell would not be able to do the same thing to anyone else.

They urged other victims of sexual abuse to speak out and not to keep it in. The two women also thanked their families and their community for the support they had been given.

The Central Criminal Court heard last month that the two girls were best friends. Ms Barratt's mother ran a hairdressers in Bangor Erris, which was next door to the West End pub where McDonnell worked as a barman.

The court heard that in September 1999, the girls developed a habit of watching cartoons in the lounge area of the pub after school. It was there that McDonnell first began abusing them.

The court heard the attacks became increasingly bold and depraved and happened two to three times a week for a year.

The court was told McDonnell threatened the girls in order to keep the abuse a secret and would give them sweets and soft drinks.

Mr Justice Garrett Sheehan noted the suffering endured by the two young girls. He said they had displayed great courage and resilience.

As disgusting as it is that he only got 7 years, his life is pretty much over in this country now because he was named. Fair play to the two girls for naming themselves and naming him, it must have taken so much courage to do so.

What a w*nker, he should be tortured for the 7 years he's in there, and then the rest of life when he gets out.

+1 on this, Fair play to them, just hope they're alright, and start to live a normal life

    So it is. Apologies.

its worrying when there is so many child rapists in the news that we get confused which one we are talking about, this country needs to have tougher laws against this sort of thing. each count of rape should carry a mandatory sentence not all at once!

What is worse is that is more justice than most people get.

not excusing the crime and I agree that seven yrs is nowhere near long enough for such a crime but why were the girls allowed in this guys pub lounge to watch cartoons unsupervised by a relative or guardian.

Again I stress that I am not excusing the crimes and if I had my way he would be jailed for life and castrated but there has to be something said about the lack of parenting here!!

Don't wish to offend anyone here but allow me to play Devil's Advocate...

Here is an article from the Mayo Advertiser of March 2010 on the original trial:

    http://www.advertiser.ie/mayo/article/23100

The evidence given seems very compelling and yet 10 members of the jury found the accused ' not guilty '.

The judged would not permit a majority verdict and ordered a retrial.

My point is that despite the graphical and disturbing evidence, 10 members still delivered a ' not guilty ' verdict.
