Question about mp3 rips

    Hi all

This is a very general question and may be really simple but I am still confused. I have been copying different albums onto my mp3 player, and some of them end up going into unknown album as they have been ripped without an album title (I am sure you know how annoying this can be) or else have nothing but the names of the track titles or somethimes not even that. Just audio file 1, 2, 3 etc.

So (because my mp3 player is my phone and doesn't have a folder option) I have a rake of unknown album with around 1000 songs haphazardly stored in a mess of an order.

So my question is: can you use a programme or something to simply put an album name and tidy up the rip, so to speak?

Another question: some of my audio books are in an arse-about-face order; they start on my mp3 player in track 13/8/12 or whatever even though they say 1-15 etc. on the computer. Is there anything I can do about this (although this isn't really important).

And yes, I am a relative computer dunce. :)

    Jak

    They're called ID-3 Tags

    Use this to name them

The best tagger I've used is http://www.xdlab.ru/en/

It just does what it's supposed to and does it properly.

This, I feel, is the best way to organise music and to have your folders:

    Desktop > Music > Artist Title > Album Title > songtitle.mp3
    Desktop > Music > Artist Title > Album Title-CD1 > 01-songtitle.mp3
    Desktop > Music > Artist Title > Album Title-CD2 > 01-songtitle.mp3

So for example, you may have this

    Desktop > Music > Queen > Greatest Hits-CD1 > 01 - Under Pressure.mp3
    Desktop > Music > Queen > Greatest Hits-CD1 > 02 - Bicycle.mp3
    Desktop > Music > Queen > Greatest Hits-CD1 > 03 - Flash.mp3

    Desktop > Music > Queen > Greatest Hits-CD2 > 01 - Radio Ga Ga.mp3
    Desktop > Music > Queen > Greatest Hits-CD2 > 02 - Save Me.mp3

So all song files of that CD are contained in the CD folder (1 or 2), and then all albums of that artist, are contained in the artist folder. Then all artists are contained in the mother "music" folder, or whatever you want to call it, audio would be better for the following reason

You could also have a folder called Audiobooks, which would be classed as the artist, and then say Ulysses would be classed as the album, with each chapter being a "song".

If you arrange everything this way, and keep everything this way, and use tag scanner to then remove all tags and then retag everything, they will all be tagged perfectly.

I'm sure both work fine at tagging mp3 files, but if you want consistency and some kind of easy to navigate collection of mp3's then you will probably have to put a bit more effort in than just retagging a few :)

True that. This should get me out of a jam for now, though. :)

    hey Cormie

having some trouble figuring out how to rename albums and artists: for some reason everything I try doesn't work. Am I missing something painfully obvious?

    thanks again

What program are you using? Open the folder containing the music you want to retag, go to the tag editor tab, select the file or files and you can edit the tag in the right hand column, the easiest way to do it though would be to arrange your collection as I stated above, and then use the folder names as the tags, so you'd set the artist folder to be tagged in the artist field if you get me.

Hey I used the first guys suggestion i couldn't figure out how to use the one you suggested i'm afraid. maybe my fault, still having trouble getting the file names transfered to title as my other mp3 (phone as well) only uses the title section not the file name!

I'll just have to keep playing with it. Thanks for your help :)

Yeah, mess around with it and see if you can manage it. If it's done properly with the method I described, and you do all your songs the same way, it will be great for consistency :) It's something I've worked on myself for a long long time to get right!
