went into the ultra modern 'phoenix' today to have dinner. qued up for about 10 minutes and eventually got dinner. i handed my debit card to the lady at the cashout and she gave me a look of utter disbelief and said

    ''we dont accept card here''

i pointed to the card machine right beside the till and said

    ''whats that?''

    and she said

''thats a card machine but it hasnt been set up yet''

seriously annoyed by having to queu up for 10 minutes and now facing the prospect of not having lunch i said to her arrogantly

''do you have any idea when it will be set up?''

    she said

''it could be next week or it could be in two weeks..'nobody knows'

i decided to leave my dinner there and headed towards the atm at the science labs. i ended up queuing here for another 5 minutes and discovered that the atm machine had no twenties or tens. normally out of principle i would never withdraw a fifty but considering it was a friday its understandable that 20s and 10s would be expended by now so i gave in and withdrew a fifty. i headed towards the londis in the john hume deciding not to return to the ultra modern phoenix as by now my dinner was probably gone cold and there was no hope of me queuing again.
i explained the story to the seriously old lady behind the cashout that the phoenix didnt take debit or credit cards and that the atm machine was only giving out fifties and she said

''thats a bit of a nusiance alright, there have been people coming in here all morning with fifties''

clearly the lady was empathising with me. i said to her it would be just handy if the shops around here took laser and it would save a lot of bother and she replied

''oh well now, we don't accept cards here either but do you know what you can do? you should go in there to the aib and complain to them that the atm machine is only giving out fifties''

i left not wanting to tell the lady how stupid she sounded.

anway what is it when it comes to modernity in this sh.ithole? i could of easily of been a student with 10 or 20 euros in the bank and would of been deprived of my lunch just because of the incompetent nature of the businesses on campus becuase they 'dont accept card'.
has anyone else experienced this utter maddness on campus or even maynooth?

I'm still wondering (after three years here) why no shop on campus, bar the bookshop in JH, takes even a Laser card. It's frustrating at times, especially at the start of the year when the Science Building ATM runs out.

This is something brought up in the election campaigns every year and yet we still haven't seen any improvement.

I think I remember banquo explaining part of the problem last year so maybe he could come on and explain?

Just out of curiosity, who's SU remit is this under?

    Chill take laser.

Also, walk to the village. There are multiple ATMs there and no one will be "deprived" of their lunch.

Remember; ATMs and shops accepting laser cards are a convenience and not a god given right

Maybe I'm completely off, but I feel that you're not quite happy here

how foolish of me to assume that modern day conveniences would exist at nui maynooth? i must be taken life for granted . afterall its only a university with 6,000 academics.

typical irish attitude, second rate standards will do.

I felt bad for you until I got to the bolded bit. That is the rudest possible thing you could have said, ok she's not that tech-savvy but it's not her fault the shop doesn't accept laser. We were having trouble serving people all day because everyone was handing us fifties, we literally had no change left, and she herself was giving out about the ATM too.

Be more careful when you mention specific people on a public forum because she happens to be one of the nicest people I know. And stop whinging about tiny problems that everyone has to deal with, unless you can offer a solution.

its not like they are going to get hit by the monorail on the way to the shop.
And even so, the SU are giving out food vouchers to students who actually are having serious difficulties
how foolish of me to assume that everybody would accept my proprietary payment method at nui maynooth?
    foolish indeed.
i must be taken life for granted .

Seeing as most of the population of this planet aren't certain of where their next meal is coming from, you might just be taking these things too seriously.
afterall its only a university with 6,000 academics.

Students != academics, sorry to shatter any delusions you might have.
typical irish attitude, second rate standards will do.

I don't see what's wrong with businesses around the campus not accepting laser, you'll be complaining they don't accept payment in gold bullion next.

Businesses are free to decide what forms of payment they accept, stamps were technically legal tender up until recently, but you didn't see the londis in John Hume accepting them.

Plenty convenient, except when you're stuck behind the person who insists on refusing to use cash. Because then you've to wait far far longer than you should ever have to. Cash is easy and quick in comparison. Efficient. You might even say... convenient. I detest having to wait for people who use cards to finish. SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW. Especially in this "modern day".

    The SU accept Laser.
If there slogan is 'Get Stuffed' I can't see too much wrong with it. :P
    Avoid the lasagne though!

I had the same problem on Thursday with the bank only giving out 50's. I only had a half hour for lunch if the Londis didn't take the 50 I was screwed and going very hungry. The point is I would not have starved to death for the day! I really feel you should be the one in the servers shoes. I know what it's like when you have no change cause everyone is handing in big notes or being snotty because there is no laser or convienent payment method for them. Those who work in the shops we/I use on campus some of them would probably love to be in our position to be going to Uni. Think before you act or speak.

You now know better so either walk into town and get money or bring it with you already exchanged for smaller notes.

Nearly got ran over earlier when I was walking over to the arts block from JH. Is it really necessary for cars to drive as fast as they would on a main road on that lane?

No, I'm not an Anthropology student, I'd reply with something sarcastic, but I wouldn't want you spending all that time you should be studying for your exams trying to understand the nuances of dry and subtle humour.
