Ibanez Edge Pro II setup advice.

Ok guys, so I should be picking up an Ibanez RG 370DX fairly soon.

Does anyone have any good links to other sites offering advice on re-stringing the Edge III locking trem? Or advice from personal experience?

I've already found this page very useful: http://forum.ibanez.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=69978 and I think that if I follow the steps he has laid out and take my time, I should be able to do it.

Now, if its a case where the truss rod needs to be adjusted, I'll bring it to a tech, but I want to have a go at re-stringing and setup myself.

I want to change the string gauge from 9's to 11's and have it in standard tuning. Will I need to add more trem springs?

Any and all advice much appreciated. Thanks :)

Would I be better off if I used 10's instead? I really can't abide anything below 10 gauge. 9's feel like dental floss or thread to me.

Any particular reason you say that? I would have thought 11s were a standard gauge.

It won't like 11's unless you add springs to the trem. 11's are heavy gauge (compared to the 'norm' these days) so the standard 2/3 springs in the back just won't be able to handle them. Expect to use 5 springs.

will 3 springs in the back handle 10 - 46 gauge?

i doubt the springs will have that hard a time with the heavier guage... but the trem will! you'll be significantly increasing the pressure on the pivot points and the trem will feel very heavy compared to how it'd feel with a set of 9's!

my only tip is don't change the height of the posts without taking all the tension off the trem... it'll destroy the knife edges!

If you move from 9s to 11s the neck will definitely bow more under the pressure and a truss rod adjustment will be unavoidable.

11s on a floyd style trem are horrible....feels like the tre isnt working properly.
And yes the extra pressure will wreck the trem posts.

10-46 should be ok with the 3 springs.

11s to me are jazz strings....just my 2c

I might just re-string it with 9's, after all.

Most Ibanez's are factory set up with Ernie Ball super Slinkys, 9 - 42 so f**k it I'll get used to 'em.

At least they're not 8's .

I use 8s sometimes on my LTD...
I like them....5 fret bends on the high E

Have 9's on it since yesterday, stretched em a good bit, haven't put the locking nuts on yet. Seems to be staying in tune anyway.

Can tell you now, that it plays well with 11's.

i own 3 ibanez guitars with various versions of the edge trem, including this particular model with the edge two and it handles 11's well, even at standard E tunings.
the only strings I wouldnt reccommend is zakk wilde signature strings where the low string is a 60.

(been using power slinkys on ibanez guitars for 5 years now)
