    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Most people don't realise what a big part Ireland played in the very early days on motor sport.

British racing green originally came about when cars from the UK were painted green when they came to race in Ireland and the cloverleaf name and symbol used by Alfa also, from memory, has to do with Alfa racing in the very early days in Ireland.

This is true.. Ireland had relaxed rules on the roads a long long time ago.. a lot of foreign events came to race here because of this..

Afaik the 4 leafed (leaved?) cloverleaf is a mythical symbol. It denotes luck..It was given to the Alfa team by Uggo Sivocci in the early '20s (pre WW-II racing.. obviously).. it was at one of the Targa Florio events if my memory is correct.

As for motor racing in Ireland... have a look at this in Cork...

I would love to see events here in Ireland again... *sigh*

    Cheers galwaytt...

I have read/researched a good bit about these events, some very nice historic cars still compete in the Irish Hillclimb Championship,

Frank Nuttall has been racing since 1959, and still does in his 1955 Graham...

And Edmund Cassidy in his Iona Special is a regular at the hills as well...

Visit a Hillclimb if you've never been, some very nice machinery regularly out, and drivers are only delighted to give the history of their cars...They sound fab when they are giving them welly :)

Footage of the 1935 Limerick Grand Prix here: http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=52614

Apparently it's the only circuit from the time that still exists in the same form today.
