....so, many years ago, I remember listening to a great documentary on Radio 1 about the original Gordon Bennett race, held in Ireland in 1903.

I remember certain passages.........about the building of Grandstands along the route.....about having 30,000 British Soldiers as marhals on the route.......about Camile 'Red Devil' Jenatzy and heady speeds of.......up to 50mph !!

Anyhoo, dunno what put it my head to go looking for it, but I've been on to RTE about 3 times in the last 12 months about it, most recently having seen an ad for the 2012 event on the 'net somewhere....

...but this time I hit paydirt - in the form of a researcher called Liam. Now, he told me he'd go and see what he could find, and I was able to give him an approximate broadcast date for when I heard it (...2003 !! )....

...and he came up with not one, but two gems: first, he ID'd the programme I was looking for, and it turned out to not be a documentary per se, but rather an edition of Bowman on Sunday. But he also turned up that RTE had done a formal documentary on the Gordon Bennet Race, in 1974. As that was a formal documentary, he put in an 'order' (or whatever) to have it added to RTE's online library, and made available as a podcast..........

...and Liam has come through again, and it is now available to download, here: http://www.rte.ie/radio1/doconone/radio-documentary-the-gordon-bennett-race-ireland.html

Now, I haven't even listened to it yet - but it doesn't matter - I think it's an interesting nugget, a piece of history, to be savoured.

The other show, the Bowman one, I'm working on, so bear with me.......

.....if you think it's a good one, please do give it a good rating on the RTE site, and maybe even drop them a note to thank Liam/the team, for digging it up, to documentaries@rte.ie

And yes, you can tell them I sent ya

    Galwaytt :)

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I was listening to this podcast the other day as it's on i tunes as and RTE documentary. Very interesting, to anyone who likes their cars or history, I was wondering what year it could be from and presumed it was the 60s as it had accounts from local people who remember the 1903 race.

Worth a listen to hear where 'British Racing green' really came from, and how prices were jacked up in 1903 for miles around once a big event came along. Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose, as they say.

Might be worth renaming this thread, I avoided it because the title made me think that it was about how older cars had advanced technology, or some such. I didn't for a moment think that it was a podcast on a 1903 car race.

I hate to be one to resurrect an old thread but this one I feel is worthwhile! I was listening to this in the car this morning and felt it was appropriate for the upcoming edition of this years event. I had intended to post it but would never duplicate something and take credit from someone else! :)

The links to the podcast in the original post is still active and can be downloaded on itunes. The radio has gotten so bad lately that I find the podcasts excellent while in the car.

For those interested, the event is on the 7th, 8th and 9th of June this year. I know it never get's any love from the majority of people in this forum, but for those that have listened to the podcast, it's a great synopsis of the history of the race, and indeed, motoring in Ireland and those who started the now annual event.
