One week honeymoon?

We're getting married in May and have a little boy who will be 2 and 9 months. We don't want to bring him on honeymoon with us (will bring him away somewhere later in the summer and have a family holiday) so realistically we can't really go for that long, probably only a week as it's not very far to leave him for longer.
Anyone have any recommendations of where to go on a weeks honeymoon? I really wanted thailand or asia somewhere but it's pointless for a week.

If you only going for a week definetly avoid anywhere which will leave you with jetlag. Try keep it in Europe maybe?
What are you looking for? Sun and lying on a beach or something a bit more?

My other half has zero interest in the states. Not sure why not but he says it just doesn't interest him.
I was thinking Italy but sounds a bit boring. We're not really a ly by the beach couple. Normally we do adventurous holidays.

I was the same, had a little boy and didnt want to leave him for too long either, so we went to Italy, 5 days in rome and 4 days in venice, because we were in two (fabulous!) locations, it felt we were on honeymoon longer ! but you should def keep it Europe, there are so many beautiful countries to choose from and only a few hours away!

I would maybe suggest Provence in south of France. Lovely places to visit that are all very close together like Avignon, Arles, aix en Provence etc. there is great food at good value and lots of vineyards to visit like chateau neuf du pape. You can also go to a place called la camargue, which is beautiful. Wild horses and flamingoes native to the area. You could rent a car and visit the different towns and villages. In may it would be nice and warm too. If you wanted to go to Nice, Cannes or monte Carlo, only a few hours in the car and next to the Italian border. Some great walks to be had too. I would recommend it for a trip of that duration. Great direct access to the region by plane from Dublin and trains are great too if you want that option.

We did a med cruise. Flew to Majorca, got the ship to Naples, Sicily, Barcelona, Sardinia and France. Left on a tue, back on a tue. It was brilliant.

Why do you think Italy would be boring? I've been all over Italy and found it fantastic. Rome and Florence are great for a city type holiday. The South of Italy, Capri and Sicily are brilliant for scenery, wonderful beaches and views with lots to see and do. Great food and wine wherever you go.
Cinque Terre in the North West is also breathtakingly beautiful.

I would definitely keep to Europe if it is only for a week.
We didn't go on a honey moon due to the kids but hopefully we get a weekend away somewhere and then a nice family holiday together.

Have you been to Switzerland? It is gorgeous up the mountains.

Not boring as such just not the most exciting honeymoon venue. I've been to Rome and loved it. I think I'll look into the South of Italy & South of France. They both sound lovely.

The cruise is a brilliant idea. I'll look into that too. I hadn't thought about it at all.

Moonbeam, i've been to Switzerland skiing and love it. Would like to go skiing in 2013 so haven't really thought about it as a honeymoon venue

We were in same position in Sept this year. Only wanted away for a week as our son was just back in school. We went to Italy also. We flew to Pisa, stayed a night, then travelled by train to Rome the following evening and stayed there for 5 nights. Rome is not really suitable for kids (imo), a lot of walking, architecture, etc, so it was nice to have a grown-up holiday for a change!
We also visited Pompeii and Mt vesuvious on a day trip.

Barcelona and Madrid are great places for a short holiday. Around May should not be too hot. You can go to the beach in Barcelona (one afternoon only if it bores you) and see all that Gaudi architecture. In Madrid you can see the palace (it's quite small), the Prado or Queen Sofia art museums, walk the Parque del Retiro (park), go to Havana salsa club, or other, shop til you drop...
I think they're both such amazing cities, very chilled out for being so metropolitan... you can walk the old streets, see some museums, grab a cold beer in the shade, get up early and get churros with coffee.
also, I'd love to go to Positano in Italy. Haven't been yet, but it's one of those picture perfect places I'd love to see.

I don't know that there would be much skiing around Europe in May. I don't know how anyone could have too many ski holidays :)

if you're into adventure holidays, then renting a bike and cycling south of France or north of Spain can be fun. Visit some vineyards, stay in lots of little holiday pensions.

My hubby was at college when we got married so we couldn't go away for more than a week because he'd miss too much of the course. We went to Paris for the week and loved it, there was loads to do, and fantastic restaurants. We went to the same restaurant that my parents ate in on their honeymoon. We went in October and the weather was surprisingly good, it was sunny and mild every day. I don't know what it would be like in May though, it might be very hot.

One thing to watch out for when you're deciding your destination is if there's any big events on around the date you're going because it can affect hotel and flight availability and prices. We were initially looking to go to Hong Kong but October is the time of year when they have loads of conferences on there so the hotel rooms were scarce and the prices had literally doubled.

Can't recommend Dubai highly enough. Guaranteed fantastic weather, luxurious relaxing hotels. And flight is only 6/7 hours.

So much to do and see. Indoor ski arena and fantastic shopping.

We went to Mexico for a week in October. Yes it was a long flight each way (12 hrs) but it was well worth it. We looked at it all as part of the holiday, few drinks and relaxed, watched a few movies.
This place is just amazing by the way.

OP I would recommend a place in Italy called Le Cinque Terre- they're these 5 little coastal villages that are connected by hiking routes, absolutely gorgeous. Food is fab and scenery amazing. You can do day trips to other places including Pisa from there. Was there this summer and have wanted to be back there almost every day since.

Might want to do a raincheck (no pun intended) on Cinque Terre. Got badly damaged by the floods in October. Whole areas destroyed. Might be back to normal by the time the OP goes on honeymoon

How about a week in some of the central European cities? I'm doing it myself this summer coming. I'm spending a few days in Budapest, Vienna and Prague.

Budapest to Vienna is only 3 hours or so by train, and similar for Vienna to Prague. Also Bratislava is only an hour from Vienna so could be a nice day trip.

Perhaps to cut down on the travelling just make it a two city trip, 3 days in one and four in the other.
