my irish friend is back from australia and has a full australian driving licence. He is going to canada shortly, and will probably come back after a year or 2. Would he be able to exchange his australian licence for an irish one,and are there any conditions for this, ie will they keep his australian licence.

As far as I'm aware you have to surrender one of them. To be honest, he'd probably be better off keeping the Aussie one. No points etc ;) Obviously he'll take a hit on the insurance but for a short stay in Ireland, not worth having it changed. Same goes for Canada. Provided you can legally drive on it here, I can't see a problem other than an insurance premium hike.

I'm not sure if there is a time limit, as far as I'm aware you can drive on an EU license in any EU country indefinitely.

There is indeed a time limit, both here and in Canada. One relevant point is that an Australian licence might well be easier to convert into a Canadian one than an Irish one. I'd check this out before deciding.

maybe not,as you need 2 years driving experience.
