Buying a used Diesel Car for under €10,000

Hi all, I have a maximum of €10000 to spend on a car. I’m looking for the best value car I can get in terms of fuel economy, reliability and lifespan. In the course of my work and personal time I would travel up to 20000 miles a year so I think a diesel car would be best. A lot of my travel is over bad roads so the car would need to be robust. My preference would be a hatchback car. I would appreciate any help choosing a model.

Toyota Auris 1.4. Handy on juice and you should get an 07/08 for your budget.
You can get them in 2 litre across the water too.

The Laguna III doesn't suffer from the same issues as the previous model. I'd have one over an Opel Vectra anyway.

how bad are the roads you are talking about?

If they are bad and you're ploghing 20000 miles a year over them, you're average hatch or saloon might not be very comfortable after a while..maybe get something a little more robust like you said

So have you any evidence to the contrary with the Laguna III as they have been on the market for more than 2 years now or are your assumptions based on what you heard about the previous model?

Mk 2 ford mondeo. 1.8TD. As far as I'm concerned its the best car ever built. 50+mpg, cheap, very reliable, comfortable, not full of stupid gimmicks waiting to give trouble.
I have a 98 model and it has 241,000 MILES on the clock and it has never missed a beat in all that time and it has been trown down country and regional roads all it's life and still on its second set of shocks. Regularly pulls a trailer too.

The engine has to be the most trouble free and bulletproof lump I've ever ecountered. Aside from normal maintenance it has never needed any attention. Normal mechanical injection basically cannot breakdown and the normal non variable turbo does its job well with any bullchit features. None of that DPF and regeneration nonsense either. Who gives a chit what comes out the exhaust in fairness.
It cost me 1000 euro in 2006 and is easlily the best 1000 i have ever spent.

A power steering pipe broke in it a few years back alright but that was due to flaking the bottom of the car off a rock while driving along a dirt track in the woods.

Compare that to my sisters 07 passat which is a nightmare with only 85,oooKm. 2 blown injectors, EGR trouble, gammy electronic hanbrake, broken dual mass flywheel, more flashing warning lights than a christmas tree, complete ball of sh!te. No thanks.

ahhh dci. that is wating to go i tell you. The good old Mondeo will outlast em all I kid you not.
Seriously, the Mondeo ticks all the OPs boxes
    • it certainly is cheap, probably get one for less than 1000 now
    • very economical. 50mpg is competitive enough even today
    • the last word in reliability if you ask me, tough as old boots
    • spacious, comfy seats, well laid out and rock solid on the road, even at speed. Cast iron engine keeps it welded to the road.

Its a bit like jeeps. If I wanted a jeep that is tough and will stand the test of time and abuse, I'd get a rugged Series Landy or a defender. Yokes like the new discos or hyundais are just a huge and expensive can of worms when it comes to reliability and repairs

Will do a million miles, and take no parts, no belts no nothing!
and put 8500 back in your pocket

Take my advice stay away from RENAULT as the warranty is not as it seems, 5 years a joke car only 19 months old and they say fault is not covered , and the after service is terrible, service prices is more because you have to as warranty says and any car over 4 years is half the price cause they need to compete with other garages.I should have believed all the bad press but thought if they stand over the car for 5 years, they must have improved things.

I never was mad about renault, Bought a lag II about 2 years ago (the feared terrible one) Put 40k miles on it, cant kill it. Had to put a bulb in it ok.

ps. I thought most extended warranties only covered originall owner no?

Sounds to me like your problem is with the garage rather than the car.... What was the Warranty issue? From experience, lots of people think that accidental breakage/natural wear is covered by warranty, which it isn't, this will be the same with any warranty regardless of manufacturer. The service criteria for warranty is simply to ensure that correct oil grades and original parts are used (30,000 klm interval is a long time for a cheap sub-standard oil which will not protect the engine!) and the vehicle is looked after correctly.

Yeh I hear where you comin from, Ive had the same problems with both opel and Volvo garages with new cars. What i meant was do those 5 year warranties cover more than the first owner, so will it affect the OP as he's looking to buy a used car. I know the likes of fiats and Kia's extended warranties say in the small print that it only covers the first owner. dont know if thats the case with Renault.

Its very rare ive come across a dealer garage that wont try and squeeze a few euro outta ya where they can. Big overheads for all those windows and TV adds. Most car companies make 2x or 3x times as much on parts as they do on selling new cars. There's method to their madness.

I do agree. Never got close on 50mpg, and struggled to better 40, but that might have been me. Scrapped my MK1 with close on 250k on the clock and it never needed an expensive repair, ever.

Its successor seems to be equally well though of, and I think the OP would be foolish to look beyond a 08+ Mondeo 1.8 TDCi Zetec. I put 140k on the same engine in a Focus before I moved it on (after a crash!), no issues much other than a DMF and alternator.

The Mondeo is better value than a Toyota or VW and it is at least as reliable if not more so. The 1.8 unit is a good simple one (insofar as a modern diesel is simple).

Regarding the Renault, I don't know why people would bother when there are less riskier alternatives for the same money, for 99% of people the laguna/passat/mondeo/avensis are indistinguishable both in looks and drive.

In relation to Kia's warranty, according to their website http://www.kiamotors.ie/Specials/Kia-7-Year-Warranty/ -> "The warranty is transferable to subsequent owners and is valid across Europe". Not much on the Fiat website to confirm one way or the other.
