FB/G+ and OpenGraph

OK I'm a bit late to the game (as I don't use FB) and have just come across Open Graph when helping someone fix a problem with some FB integration (they didn't have any OG metadata and the wrong image was being inferred).

So I have decided to have a play with understanding (at least superficially) OG and try and get it working on a few sites that I can play with. Now AFAIK the OG metadata makes the page it is present on an object/graph for FB (and to a lesser extent G+) so when it was liked or shared they would know what was being shared (i.e. a person, book, article etc).

Now I assumed that now that the page had the OG metadata and a specific URL that FB would treat it like a unique object so that if it is posted by someone to FaceBook and this post was liked it was the same as liking the object itself and would increment the Like count on the page. But it appears that by posting something on FB a completely new object is created so if 500 people share your content and 500 people like each of those posts but no one clicks "Like" on the actual page despite having 250,000 Likes the count on your web page says 0.

I think it is the same with G+.

Is the FB problem solved by having an FaceBook App ID for the WordPress plugin I am using (Facebook Likes You!)? I'm not on FaceBook but can get someone I'm working with to sort it out.

Any ideas generally about what I should be looking at/reading to understand how like et al are integrated? Or do I just not get FB and G+ (not that I would be particularly disappointed by that revelation).

Having the app will only allow you to see the FB activity for your web objects.

Just to clarify your post - are you asking that if an open graph object is shared into Fb (lets say a blog post) that the likes received on the web site should be added to any likes that it gets when it is posted by FB by any user?

So far as I can see, FB won't aggregate the likes that your content received on your website and any likes that the same content receives when shared about by whoever on FB.

I have a "Like enabled" site that has an app on FB, the metrics only refer to the likes on the website itself.
