    Hi all,
Am doing a bit of research and I am wondering if someone could give me some background info. on who and when decided to have the symbol of the Celtic Cross on GAA medals, they're reasoning for it given that the GAA was meant to be non-sectarian, etc. Any info greatly appreciated

I believe the celtic cross you are referring to is the old GAA crest/logo
    It was decorated with:
    A harp in the middle
'éire' written across the horizontal of the cross
the words 'Cumman' 'Lúth' 'Gael' 'Chleas' in a circle around the outside of the cross (Read left to right, top to bottom: Cumman Lúthchleas Gael or Gaelic Athletic Association as Gaeilge)

It used to be painted on the middle of the pitch for All Ireland Finals.

It seems that even though the GAA have re-branded twice in recent years, the medals still take the shape of the old logo only replacing the harp and éire with the new GAA logo.

This is all from my own memory and understanding, so I'm open to correction on any of the above. I'm struggling to find any info about the history of the GAA logo online.

Edit - and as soon as I post I find a nice link that shows some GAA merchandise before and after the 2009 re-branding:
2009 REBRAND 100 Winners - GAA- Gaelic Athletic Association - Rebranding by The Brand Union - Dublin

As a matter of interest, what do you believe to be sectarian about a celtic cross?

To my knowledge, like the shamrock, it is one of the symbols used by all traditions on the island.

As an example here is the logo of the Irish football Association, a celtic cross!
