Competition started this morning, hopefully Irish swimmers will do well.
    Heats this morning
    Nocher makes 100m backstroke semi

Irish swimmer Melanie Nocher has reached the semi-final of the women's 100m backstroke on day one of the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Poland.
Nocher, a 200m backstroke specialist, was tenth fastest in the Thursday morning heats in a time of 59.37 seconds.

She set a new Irish senior record in the process by eclipsing the old mark set by Aisling Cooney back in 2009.
Gráinne Murphy failed to make the final of the women's 200 Butterfly and the 200 Individual Medley.
She broke her own 200IM Irish record in this morning's heats in a time of 2:12.71. That was .15 of a second inside the time she set a year ago.
The 800m freestyle, Murphy's main event, is on Friday.
The 18-year-old Wexford swimmer will also be looking to at least make the finals of the 400 freestyle and 400 IM over the weekend. She won bronze medals in those events at last year's Championships in Eindhoven.

Grainne Murphy swam well, not used to short course as much as long course. And the top 3 were all at least 5 years older than her.
    Murphy misses out on medal

Grainne Murphy missed out on a bronze medal when she was finished fourth in the Women's 800metres Freestyle at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Poland.
The 18-year-old from Wexford recorded a time of 8:19.39, a new Irish record, but she was over three seconds off third spot.

The gold was won by Denmark's Lotte Friis who beat Murphy to the European 1500-metre title in Budapest last year with Spaniards Erika Villaecija Garcia in silver and Melanie Costa Schmid taking bronze.

Grainne Murphy is through to the 400m freestyle final this afternoon, 10th Dec in Poland.
Melanie Nocher also made the final, but has withdrawn to focus on her main event 200 back crawl.
A lot of personal bests, junior and irish senior records broken from the 9 swimmers.

Murphy reaches 400 metres finalGrainne Murphy has qualified for the final of the women's 400 metres freestyle at the European Short Course Swimming championships in Sczezen in Poland.

However, Melanie Nocher, who was ahead of Murphy in qualifying, has pulled out of the final to concentrate fully on her main event, the 200 metres backstroke. The heats of that event take place tomorrow morning.

Nocher and Murphy were only placed 11th and 13th overall after the heats of the 400 metres, but because countries are only allowed two swimmers in a final, Nocher was deemed to have qualified as both Spain and Great Britain had three swimmers faster than the Irish competitor.

Nocher wins bronze at European event

Melanie Nocher has won a bronze medal at the European Short Course swimming championships at Szczecin in Poland.
Nocher's time of 2min 4.29secs set the second Irish record of the day by 0.71secs to give the Loughborough-based swimmer her first international medal.

The 23-year-old justified her decision to pull out of Saturday's 400m freestyle final to concentrate on her main event, and she posted her early intention by winning her morning heat in an Irish record time of 2:05.00.
After a slow start, Nocher found herself in sixth place at the 50-metre mark before moving into third place behind fastest qualifier Daryna Zevina of Ukraine and Spain's Duane Da Rocha Marce.
Zevina pulled away over the second half of the race to claim the gold medal in a new championship record time of 2:2.24 with Da Rocha Marce holding off a fast finishing Nocher to take silver.

Brilliant swim from Melanie, well deserved!!!
